Formula Endgame

Regular carrier here going to an office that has become formula. I’ve read on here a little about this kinda thing. Any perspective on if it’s good or bad? Heard a while back that formula is to eventually get everyone to have Saturday off. True?

Formula does the opposite. You can end up losing your Saturday if there aren't subs and it gets recalculated. It basically allows management to give the carrier a day off during the week versus Saturday only. Depending on the type of person you are, it can be good or bad. If you like having a day off during the week to get appts done, a formula office is fine. If you prefer two days off in a row, it will be hard to get that if your seniority is low.

union will tell you it is a thing of beauty when the carriers respect each other and do not call in on SL. or take AL. that is a quote from our AS. who was in office when we switched well folks call in and take AL. so I call it fugly.

Overall, I’d say it’s a mixed bag. We do have a lot less problems getting our days off now so less burn out I think. But unless your high up seniority or a J route ( which I feel lucky to have right now), you won’t get Saturday off. without formula management tells you you have to work Saturday so here’s an X day with extra pay or code 5 pay. Then perhaps you take a Wednesday off for that X day. NOW it will be your day off is Wednesday and sorry no extra pay for you.

-- Depends -- if you used to have a Saturday relief day and after manglement implemented the "Formula", you have been assigned another relief day other than a Monday, that's probably a bad thing.

-- Also once an office goes "Formula" ( Article 9.2.C.5.b. ) , it usually will be a "Formula Office" for a long time.

-- And also means the carriers would not "play nice" by volunteering to take a non-Saturday / non-Monday relief day.

-- AUX routes go to 6/0, unless totally seasonal, then it can be 5/1.

-- Manglement may not be in any hurry to recalculate the formula ( actually doing the math and having to change scheduling ) whenever there has been a change in routes authorized to have a relief day or a change in the number of AUX routes or a change in the number of available RCA's, so one could be stuck with a non-Saturday relief day for a longer period of time.

"Heard a while back that formula is to eventually get everyone to have Saturday off. True?"

-- When an office goes "Formula", J-routes get a Saturday relief day. ( unless some other relief day is agreed upon with manglement )

-- The only way for everyone to have a Saturday relief day is to have a sub on every route. And these days, that is not likely to happen.

-- To learn more, search for "formula office" in RI's KNOWLEDGEBASE Section at the top left of the page.

Or if your sub count is low. A week off for a vacation? Yeah, that's probably not going to happen, unless EVERYONE in the office cooperates.

What is wrong with these people??!!! Of course I plan to take AL. I earned it, I am going to use it. And who knows when they might need SL?

I have no idea what you're talking about. We had a carrier take off four months in a formula office. Management has to follow the Order of Consideration, and the only reason they can deny the leave is if there are no leave replacements.

Not every carrier wants Saturday off. Some want a day off during the week to get things done. For example, we just added eight Saturdays to our Matrix and the top 15 carriers that have a non Saturday K day did not want to switch to a Saturday. Carriers call in no matter their K day.

Formula office works so much better in an office with many carriers. Consider what happens with 4 routes, 1 PTF and no applicants for RCA. Hence the needed cooperation. No applicants for over a year by the way. Currently an all POV office, maybe a couple of the vans will come our way. PM claims lack of sizeable ride is the problem with people taking an RCA position.

So mgmt had to force Juniors to switch to Saturday? How unusual. ☺️

Couldn't you possibly switch your k day to something other Saturday without going formula?

I used to sub at another office during the week, and it was formula, but still needed subs during the week.

I don't know your situation, maybe it works for you, but I mean no daca 5's or 3's. We don't make that much.

You should still be able to schedule a Saturday off, even if on rdwl, by including Friday or Monday(if necessary) with it.

Now I know its sounds as some offices are to shorthanded to get any days off, but I don't see how formula fixes that. People probably just call in on Saturday anyway.

Now I know you gotta do whats best for you, and worry about yourself, but I say bad, bad, bad.

Thats alot of money for carriers to lose, you can take 3's, save annuals, and still make a little more money, or 5's and more money.

I know you have to have rca's, but I don't see formula fixing that.

OK I'll stop formula is bad good luck

we are a formula office and ever k day I am called in or have been mandated in because the RCA's are working 7 days a week the regulars are working 6 days a week mandated for 2 months 2 subs for 16 routes 2 aux routes only and a ptf that is unable to work because he has pictures of the pm and a goat.

Actually didn’t end up coming to that. Got through about 20 regulars before the juniors started saying yes.
That’s just crazy too me. I’m in a formula offfice and currently have a J route. But I’d kill to have a K route with Saturdays off. We do have a couple carriers with high seniority who have Mondays. It works for them. Otherwise, I’d take Saturday hands down.

If you're a J route, you have to have every other Saturday off. To be honest, the best day in my opinion is either Fri/Sat rotating or Tuesdays off. Practically every Holiday falls on a Monday, so you get a three day weekend and generally won't have to do advos.
