Disability retirement?

I am trying to retire under the disability retirement plan. If with all my treatments and surgery I would be able to return like in 2 years would I lose my retirement if I came in another craft or as an RCA

-- Guessing you are a regular carrier. If so, check MOU #6, if your medical condition(s) is/are work related, you could hold on to your route for two years.

-- If retiring on disability, both postal and SS, each require ALL the i's be dotted and the t's crossed before final approval - and that could take a long time.

-- If you got out on disability, why return to work, especially within the postal system?

That might be tough, OPM rules specify that to apply for FERS disability you must also apply for Social Security disability. There is also something about if you return to working it must be in the same job/position. Lots of unknowns.

If you go to federalsoup.com click on "forum" then scroll down till you see a sub heading "pay and benefits" then click on Federal Employee Benefits Q&A. The "expert" there is named Ed Zurndorfer and he really is an expert in retirement issues. If you post your question there I'm sure you'll get an accurate answer. That's also a great resource for anybody else that has a tough retirement question.
