I am considering resigning, what happens to my TSP and retirement?

My husband will be retiring within a few weeks and we have discussed doing some extensive traveling within the country. I have applied for another job with pretty close to the same pay as I am receiving now (minus EMA) and I will be able to work on the road.

If I resign, what happens to the money I have contributed to my retirement and TSP? Before the global hubbub, I was contributing 20% to my TSP. Will I be flushing that cash down the toilet by resigning or will it be held somewhere until I reach retirement age?

-- I believe that has been covered in a recent thread.

-- Try using "SEARCH" at the top right hand corner of the page.

-- Suggestions: "retirement" or "TSP" or "vesting" or a combination

Bennie Franklin et al -- "why do you think it critical to make copies of eOPF?"

-- Once you retire, resign, or otherwise cut ties with the USPS, you will no longer have access to liteblue and your eOPF.
Under what circumstances might I need that? There are a LOT of pages in there. Specifically which ones might be needed?

Make certain your review back pay, cola back pay are both current before you bail. And make copies of your eOPF before you loose access at resignation.
Has anyone ever had retirement FACTUALLY screwed up where they needed documentation from eOPF? Has anyone provided this information and had retirement recalculated? (i just want to know how closely i need to be monitoring this process)

Yes, it happens. That's why they tell you to review your file and DATES carefully. If you find out a discrepancy after you separate- it's a nightmare to correct.
It is more prone to happen when bridging service years and when back pay/service dates are awarded due to grievance activity. The calculations are wrong because they don't update the system.

Generally, make copies of any pay increases or job changes.

Looking at the number of pages is intimidating. Mine was 192. It includes all of my Federal record. You can download the whole file without printing it. Why not? Its a little space on your computer hard drive. If you ever need it, its there.

If you are still considering your decision hopefully I can help. As long as you have 5 years of service your TSP and retirement are safe. Depending on your age and years of service there may be a penalty on your pension. You can avoid the penalty by deferring or postponing the payment of the pension. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions because this is a complicated choice.
