Dress Code

Hello,

Back in the old forum someone had a link or the reference to the dress code for Rural Carriers.

Something like shirts had to have a strap at least two fingers in width, no excess chest showing, and no side of the body showing .

Shorts no more than 5" above the knee...and shoe requirements also.

Been looking and cannot find this again.

Not in contract or 603.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, if not thanks :)

page 1 in the 603 --12 Basic Carrier Responsibilities Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following items: a. Reporting for work promptly, as scheduled. b. Presenting a neat, clean, and professional appearance reflecting a positive postal image.

strap width on shirts, or 5" above knee for shorts,  are most likely made up interpretations by the supervisors.  provide the 603 reference, and let them show you written rules that are more explicit.  yoga pants are below the knee, but do not reflect a professional appearance, especially when stretched to within an inch of failure.

Preach!

No no, I am sure I read it somewhere, now that I think about it more, I am sure it was when I was researching the upper leather for shoes thing.

So would you know where that is listed?

probably some ELM or Safety manual somewhere.

<blockquote class="spPostEmbedQuote">Your kidding right...? What is strap width? I've been wearing "comfortable" clothing such as basketball shorts or cargo shorts that are at or slightly covering the knee.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="spPostEmbedQuote">With these "uncomfortable" LLVs,  hot boxes with no air, anything beyond "tool box" clothing, not going to happen, might as well become a city carrier. But I do understand presentable appearance.</blockquote>

--  The PO-603 reference is as specific one you will find.

--  Way back when, the earlier ELM Chapter 8, Section 814 addressed shoes, but the latest ELM Section 814 now addresses Employee Rights and Responsibilities

--  The ELM's Chapter 9, Section 930 addresses Work Clothes and Uniforms.  But a word search for "rural" comes up empty.  It applies to certain employees who must wear prescribed uniforms in the performance of their duties.  Such employees are entitled to a uniform allowance.   That certainly doesn't include to the rural craft.

--  Looks as if local policy dictates what can and can not be worn by rural carriers, such as presented by the Kentucky League of Postmasters.  More specifically, Step 4 ( D-62 ), paragraph 2.  Postal management at the local level will be responsible for determining the appropriate standard of appearance.  However, local postal management will be reasonable and rational in determining that appropriate standard of appearance.

--  The EL-801 ( Supervisor's Safety Handbook ) addresses only "footwear", no other apparel.

--  Article 3 of the current in-print contract.  Management's Rights.  e.  To prescribe a uniform dress to worn by letter carriers and other designated employees.

If they enforce a rule on one person make them enforce it on everyone. Dont allow them to single you out because someone complained.
