Private, non county/city maintained roads

So, if you deliver out the window to houses on a private road ( they paid for it to be asphalted) and it is 1.5 to 2 car lengths wide.
In my POV can I deliver the mail from drivers side as there is no official wrong/ right side of road?
I cannot straddle a full size minivan and am tired of getting out 40 times a day fof this small section.

Technically you can, but keep in mind if a collision occurs you would be entirely on your own as your now on the wrong side of the road in the eyes of the law.

We do not deliver ordinary letters, magazines to locations on Private Roads. The Machine policy is public roads only. Parcels and accountables are to be attempted only if the distance from the box to the dwelling does not exceed 1 mile roundtrip.

These boxes should be moved to the end of this private road where it meets a public road in your line of travel.

Mileage might be a good thing for jingle in pocket now. If an accident happens on this Private Road and you are out of work because of curbside delivery approved by a lowly Ringmaster unfamiliar with written rules. You will fight an uphill battle delaying your proper compensation when the full force of Machine lawyers are in play.

Remember their view first is carrier at fault. Just look at all the warnings one gets on the scammer to get them off the hook. Those appeared when they lost a few battles with OSHA and had to pay fines.

Just saying a customer who was rear ended way back in January with carrier at fault. They are still insurance fighting for a check for damage to their ride. The LLV was back in action the next day.

All -- Private Roads or Lanes vs Private Driveways -- let the lawyers figure that out and get back to you!

-- Forgot to wish the M-38 ( Management of Rural Delivery Services ) a happy 40th birthday back on 01 JUL 2020.

-- Chapter 4 - Extensions of Rural Routes

420 Criteria

- Extensions should serve an average of at least one family per mile of additional travel including retrace. Consider other factors, such as financial transactions, and type and volume of mail.

- 430 Roads

- 431 General

Roads generally should be public, must be maintained, and must be passable for carrier vehicles on a year-round basis. They must not be obstructed by gates that are unattended or are not automatic. Where there are streams crossing the road [ really rural ], they must be fordable at all seasons of the year or have suitable bridges to permit carrier vehicle travel.

- 432 Private Roads or Lanes

Extensions may be approved over private roads or lanes provided:
a. A minimum of two families are benefited.
b. All other requirements are met, including the mileage/family criteria as stated in Part 420
c. A letter is submitted.. blah, blah
d. The road or lane has no unattended gates or obstructions that would hinder the immediate access of carrier vehicles or personnel.

433 Private Driveways

433.1 A driveway leading directly to a customer's yard is private and should not be considered public even though maintained by a municipality.

433.2 Rural service must not be extended onto private driveways.

As I said previously, let the lawyers figure that out. Maybe someone can determine what the length of a driveway is compared to a private road. Sections of the M-38 probably written by someone who has never driven cross country without using the interstate system. Some of those "driveways" can be pretty long!
