Thinking about transferring to a different route as a regular.

I use a POV. I have a 44k route 330 mailboxes, with 85 miles of gravel, 50 miles of pavement . Another route is opening up , 45k 460 mail boxes , 100 miles of pavement , 13 miles of gravel. My POV takes a beating and maybe that route with less gravel would be better for my car. What do you think? I want my car to last longer lol.

That really depends on the condition of the pavement. And if the shoulders are well graded off the pavement.

Have you driven the entirety of the route you’re thinking of switching to?

I was thinking the increased stops and more creeping would be harder on your tranny and cooling system. So it kinda depends on what you drive. I have about a hundred miles of very pot holed, rough gravel and about 20 miles of pavement, but my xj, having straight axles and all, doesn't take a lot of damage to the suspension. Transmissions are typically expensive to replace. (Not for me though, aw4s are still super cheap. I already keep around and extra just in case.)

When you say "Transferring", is the route going up for bid? Will you be able to bid on that route with your current seniority?

The smallest routes around here are in the 460-470 range. Only one smaller I've done was an Aux that had 127 lol. The worst I had was 735 and they were putting in a development to add another 100 deliveries. Glad I got away from that office. Around 600 is ideal to me.

mmm.... last carrier keep up with things? i took over a route once, ended up emptying and removing about 60 boxes... it was at the beginning of old fashioned mail count... i was the one labeled a thief because of the 60 or 70 daily pcs of rts mail from those said boxes alone....

I'd say take it. You get a raise, and hopefully pov gets somewhat of a break from rougher roads....I WOULD drive whole rt first, and take a good look at red book pretty closely, see how clean rt is... If it meets your requirements, I'd get it....and enjoy the ride.

Also consider adverse weather times. Flood plains suck.

I'd drive it first. We've got some chip and seal roads that are rougher than any gravel I've seen.

I'd also take a lonely gravel road over getting blown past constantly on some of those busy two lane highways.

I guess everyone is missing my point............. you are carrying 625 boxes a day.......... what if you had another 100 added tomorrow. Wouldn't it be a big deal? But actually, 300 to 400 is a 33% increase, so it would be like adding 250 to your route.

Most rural routes have much higher box numbers now. In the last 10 years the boxes per route have really gone up. I've dealt with districts over RTS with more than 1200 boxes and no relief.
