While the Postal Service has no official motto, the popular belief that it does is a tribute to America’s postal workers. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”— is not the official Postal Service motto though it appears chiseled in gray granite over the entrance of the James A. Farley building at Eighth Avenue and 33d Street in Manhattan.


The phrase comes from book 8, paragraph 98, of The Persian Wars by Herodotus, a Greek historian. During the wars between the Greeks and Persians (500-449 B.C.), the Persians operated a system of mounted postal couriers who served with great fidelity.

I'd be willing to bet.....those carriers didnt have a union either....

Especially now in these rear wheel drive vans we dont come close. I wish the public knew this.....2 snowstorm a week this winter and I wanted to use that 2x4 every time a customer said this.

I hear ya Nicholemail....I mean, it's like adding insult to injury....sssiigghhhh....
Almost none of our customers have a clue how much abuse, stress, and suffering we as carriers experience daily...

That's why when our customers become our coworkers anywhere from 50%-80% run away! But im sure all of them will claim they used to be a mailman once upon a time.

That's why when our customers become our coworkers anywhere from 50%-80% run away! But im sure all of them will claim they used to be a mailman once upon a time.

I have 8 customers on my route who at one time were rural subs. Love them they are the first to clear snow, debris with a well maintained driveway and walkway to door. Couldn’t ask for better customers that’s all the thanks I will ever need or want.
