Calculating SL credit for retirement...

So according to this article (above), what gets dropped, is the days that don't equal a full month, AFTER your SL AND active service time are added together... previously, I had thought it was just about the days of SL that didn't equal a full month...

As the article explains it, if you have 20 years, 6 months, and 15 days of active service, and 5 months and 15 days of SL, then you would retire with 21 years of service and forfeit NO SL.... but one day less of SL or service time, and you'd lose an entire month of credit.... correct??? 🤷‍♂️

566.23 Determining Length of Service

For annuity computation purposes, length of service is determined by adding together all periods of the employee’s creditable civilian and military service and the period credited to the employee for unused sick leave. After obtaining total service, the fractional part of a month is dropped because annuity is computed on the basis of years and months. No credit is allowed for the remaining odd days of total service.
This is from ELM. but I'm not sure how many days they consider a month because different months have a different amount of days.

-- The OPM calculates annuities on a 360-day ( 12 equal months of 30 days in length ), 360 into 2,087 ( by law, there are 2,087 hours in a work year ) equals roughly six hours.

-- Google "sick leave conversion chart"

Its worth much more used than it is for credit towards retirement pay.
Honestly, if you can use it all at the end, it's the best of both worlds.... 1, you get your full pay, TSP contributions & matching, etc... 2, you continue to accrue MORE AL & SL while you're off... 3, you're ALSO getting the added length of service added for retirement annuity (which is ALL you get if you don't take it) 🤷‍♂️ 😲

Credit for an evaluated day vs whatever # hours OPM considers a day.

Well, I do have the estimate from LiteBlue.... actually a few of them using different dates....

They show what the actual service time is on one line, years, months, days... then the next line they list SL, then the 3rd line lists the total.... but it doesn't really make clear what gets dropped off.... 🤷‍♂️ 🧐

But it does give you a number that will be added towards the Annuity so do the math. Just remember that its a snap shot of what you had available at the time you requested the estimate!

Yes and no... it may say you have a total of 20 years, 2 months, and 29 days between active service and SL.... it doesn't specifically say that the 29 days count or don't count....

Mine has a section on page # 4 that has a break down its labeled as "Time Represented by Sick Leave"!

It also includes
Total Actual Service (Entitlement to annuity is determined from this total)
&
