LLV GPS installed in all vehicles this week

Just installed this week. PM says they aren't able to access any data, it's all for District and VMF so they understand exactly where all vehicles are at all times and can reallocate to office in need on a particular day, etc. Hope they got a real deal on the hardware and system, as we know they're all 30 years old and headed for the boneyard....is this happening elsewhere also?

They put them in our LLVs many months ago. They didn't do ALL the vehicles at once , almost 50 . They started with the Metris Vans and then did the LLVs. We are roughly half and half Metris / LLV. Although, they only did this AFTER they got rid of the series number LLVs they decided to crush.

Reallocate vehicles, thats a good one, many parts of the country do not have enough of govt vehicles.

Our offices out West are constantly short from breakdowns. Shuffling among about a dozen offices to try to stay afloat. City often gives someone the day off so they can pivot their route and use their vehicle.

Since VMF now only does repairs that cost under $1200 (per phone conversation with PM and head of VMF) all those needing engine or transmission work are scrapped. Slipping tranny? To the boneyard.

We constantly are changing chairs on the deck of the Titanic

It is a lot more than a GPS system, check out www.geotab.com. It will track speed, sudden stops, has an add-on for "driver coaching".
Just read the website in detail. This system monitors every single aspect and action of a driver and vehicle, from route deviation to speed, idle, acceleration, braking, and location, among other things. All this data is available real time to a central location, (our District), who has the dashboard and software to isolate any vehicle's performance outside the "norm" they establish (acceleration, for example) or too much idling time or any deviation from line of travel (don't miss a parcel, you'll get an alert) Typically if the system "beeps" while being driven, an alert is sent to local office (PM) to investigate and take corrective action.

And you thought Big Brother was watching before! Every time you step on the gas, brake, or initiate a turn this information is being sent to central command, for comparison against a standard and a normal.

To the post office, "driver coaching" is written discipline.

Thanks to @Gotrope and @Cobrabuilder for the tip offs.

All -- From the "To make the gravel "fly" or not" thread:

- Recently our new PM did a ride along with everyone. Some were told we needed to make the gravel fly when we leave a box and apply the brake harder when we get to the box so our backs leave the seat.

-- Hopefully those carriers got it in writing!!

If it gets wet, it is a fire hazard. That is according to their own installation guide.

So, let me see if I am understanding this correctly. The rural carrier job is in and of itself a job that places the employee in the weather elements. The carrier and the vehicle are exposed to the weather elements. With respect to the Metris, you get soaked while IN the vehicle let alone how much water enters that thing when you have to open the door. With respect to the LLV, they ALREADY ARE a fire hazard by themselves. So, the employer knowingly installs "something" , that when exposed to water, is a fire hazard ?

Well...sometimes when I put the pedal to the metal, it's to get out of mud or snow when stuck. I'm sure we can think of a number of things to explain an strong acceleration...
