I think a copy of the letter should be in every Postal Service vehicle so that we may show law enforcement why we refuse to give some types of information. I also believe our fearless union should push for clarification of exactly what the letter requires and how Rural Carriers will be compensated for the time we spend contacting people to carry out the order. Time in vehicle inspection to make certain the letter is actually in the vehicle and compensation to ask for a replacement when necessary. We are not a free service.

But postal workers give law enforcement people's addresses all the time. A Navy Jag?? was looking for an awol sailor whose family lived on my route (and I knew from school with and saw working in the yard everyday). I told the guy with the badge I couldn't help him, he would have to call the PM for further advice. He finally told me the sailor's address was XXXX Street and wanted to know which house it was. I did tell him, the # is on the outside of the mailbox. I still say it was a postal inspector trying to arrest me for giving out information. BTW I saw the AWOL guy a few days later at the mailbox again.

It only happened to me once.. 2 or 3 US Marshalls were going up and down the road on foot when I came thru, one of them asked me if I knew which house some guy lived in... I just pointed to the house... they had flak vests on and weapons and badges on full display... I made mention of it when I got back to the PO, and nothing was said about it... 🤔 🤷‍♂️👉🧐
 
I was nearly run off the road recently while delivering by people who wanted to know if I had seen the guy they were looking for at a house where I dropped off a package. They refused to identify themselves. Apparently based on the name they said they had staked out the wrong house while trying to arrest the man. All I could say was I hadn't seen anyone. They acted pissed off but too bad. Unless there is an emergency or the information request comes thru the Postmaster you don't give out info. It is privacy act protected and you will be liable.
 
When approached by law enforcement (it's always been in uniform and marked car) I ask for the warrant or refer him to the PM. They know that's the proper procedure.

Not for a while... I think he got locked up.... at the time I don't think I'd ever been told not to provide info to law enforcement... in fact, I'm not sure I was ever told that while working for USPS.... 🤔 🤷‍♂️👉🧐

There was one other occasion where a person shot at a police officer and barricaded himself in a house... I never saw so many cops in any one place before... They had all the roads blocked off around it, so I had to do a bunch of detouring.... Then I saw some local deputies dragging some big marijuana plants out of the woods once, and that's about all the law enforcement excitement I can remember in 25 years of slinging the mail.... 🤔 🤷‍♂️👉🧐

You haven't lived until you are on your 4th murder suspect search and you're just hoping the bagel shop doesn't close/secure because you skipped breakfast.
Or you argue with the young cop about the caliber of round that just cracked the plate glass.

Yeah, I figure peeps who deliver in the suburbs of big cities ought to see a lot more action than I ever did.. some of the roads I traveled on, excitement might mean just seeing another vehicle on the road as it was such a rare occurrence... my route was mostly on the serious boondocks... When it snowed, often my tracks were the only ones on the unplowed roads.... 🤔 🤷‍♂️👉:oops::ROFLMAO:

The extended suburbs where most of our offices' routes are is probably the easiest of routes for carriers. Lots of mail and parcels, but it's safe, easy to navigate, not too far from civilization. Most of management is not too bad as they elevate the real a-holes to district.

My place up north there are deer EVERYWHERE. As farms and ranches get split to smaller acreages, deer roam everywhere grazing. Have to drive totally alert day or night. Dogs, horses, and deer by now all ignore each other.
