Aux route ?

Hi, our office has an aux route that has been vacant for years. This route has a sub who carries it on Saturdays only due to health limitations. I do this route mon-fri but am not allowed to have a hold down on it and accrue AL & SL because its "his route" according to supervisor. End of discussion...is this correct ?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that this has nothing to do with health problems. I'll bet that the Sat. only carrier has 2 things, a job that conflicts with the Post Office hours and a friend in Mgmt. I hope I'm wrong but all of us that have been around for a while have seen something like this in the past, not usually "health problems" but some reason they can't work. I bet if a regular route came up for bid that carrier would have a miracle cure.

ruralsub123 --  RCA assigned to an AUX, only runs it on Saturdays, do to health issue.

--  I'd say it would be worth contacting the Assistant District Representative.   Could be one of those cases in which the RCA "know where the bodies are buried", hence manglement leaves him alone.

--  #6 on page 49 of the new contract might come into play here.

--  If the ADR discovers that manglement has not been honest in the way the AUX is being run, i.e., the AUX should have been offered a l-o-n-g time ago to someone who is capable of running it every day, have the ADR request back pay and accrued leave back to when the AUX should have been posted.

Well I'm half right anyway. If he is only able to carry an Aux. once a week then somebody in Mgmt. must like him or he would be gone.

So, making sure I have this straight, this guy is the senior sub and has the aux route...but runs the aux, and only the aux on Saturdays?  That can't be many hours.  Why doesn't this guy go back to being a full time sub, so to speak, and give up the aux route to someone else?  He would still only have to work Saturdays, and would pick up a few extra hours pay.

There may not be much you can do about it though.  You're not required to bid on a full route.  I would call a state steward though...never know what may come of it.

Thanks for the insight.. I just contacted the union, I think our office is just happy to have another body that can cover a route on Saturday without paying a regular ot......and by denying me a hold down can put me where its convienent for them and leave the aux open for newbies to be trained... Frustrating.

(1) Yes, management is always happy to have a body in the case, especially on Saturdays. We have 2 or our 4 subs that can only work weekends -or- with advanced notice sometimes during the week and management is pretty happy with that. (2) Not only can they put you wherever it's convenient for them but they're saving a decent chunk of change on leave earning as the aux carrier is only earning based on that one day per week.

Sounds like the Union needs to step in here. A sub assigned to an aux route has the option of running the route 6/0 or 5/1 (if not formula). Either option is a 6-day work week. There is NO option for 1 day a week only.
