Ive Been Sub #1 For 3 Years With A Route Not Opening Up Until 9/18.. Can I Tell The PM I'm Working A M-F Job And Only Work My Assigned Saturday? I just can't survive on 2-4 days of work a month.
You will be considered unavailable if you are working a M-F job and they call you. Better to call surrounding offices and explain you need to work; if you know you will get a route in 18; that's not such a long time to hang on.
Also we have 2 other subs and only 5 routes total. The 3rd sub currently is working a 9-5 m-f job (for her parents...yea) and she's already refused to work sundays.
We are an APO/RMPO. No Azon Sundays. 1 RMPO RCA on the matrix landed a fulltime job. This RCA mainly covered a primary route of Sat, AL and SL days. Yet with the new matrix and shortage of coverage after 5 calls of non availability management gave them the option of leaving on their own terms or be let go. They left. Now short another RCA off the matrix.
I don't know the circumstances of your office or area. How good are the bene's at this new job? How safe is your position at this new place? What would you rather do? If in an APO/RMPO factor in cross bidding. If not, what about the possibility of becoming one? You might not be #1 anymore. When it happened at my office there wasn't much advance warning. # 1 RCA in my office became #3. These are a few suggestions you need to toss about along with many others. Good luck.
When I first hired on as an RCA I was working 1 day a week on my primary route. As time went by and I learned a second then third routes I worked more days.
But there were still weeks that I would only have 2 or 3 days of work. The checkbook was taking a bad hit.
I managed to find a very flexible part time job to fill the free time.
The 2nd job was set up so I could come and go as necessary and they were happy for the help.
A couple of times I got called into the PO after I was working on the 2nd job (Regular carrier went home sick)
Management came to rely on me as they knew if I wasn't bleeding when they called I would work. And I always answered the phone.
Not the case with some of the other RCA's in the office at the time.
Eventually I learned all the routes in the office and started farming myself out to other PO's in the area.
As PO work became everyday I stopped working at the 2'nd job.
I even had one day that I was in overtime for the week at the PO but did the route anyway because no other sub was available. Finished under eval and then went to work on the 2'nd job for a few hours.
So yes you can work a second job as an RCA but you have to set it up with management or get something really flexible.
