Florida rural letter carriers will rally Friday, Oct. 16, in Gainesville to call for stronger protections against robberies and assaults and urge Congress to pass the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act

Do we have some people from Florida that will tell us more about what is going on with this?

I do not trust the "Protect Our Letter Carriers Act". I think it is about the Postal Service getting control of money to supposedly protect Letter Carriers. I do not expect the money to actually be spent that way. If carriers are to be protected they or their representatives should have at least 50% control of the money and how it is spent.

As for the tougher laws, feels good on talk, is it really going to make a difference? We have become a more practical target. If this remains will potential punishment make a difference?

I see POLC as just adding charges to charges. It means and does nothing in particular. If a perpetrator wouldn't be scared away via possible punishment, more punishment won't change things. Also updating our lockboxes just makes our jobs harder. I've used the electronic blue box, you need your scanner to cooperate, and good luck for rainy days.

Only thing I like about it is equivalency charges for assaulting a USPS employee to being the same level as assaulting law enforcement. But I again don't think additional charges are helpful.

Should let us carry, but people have larger concerns that would disallow that...

These first initiatives relate to Carrier safety after the fact in the form of investigation, prosecution, and sentencing

- Dedicated Prosecutors: Requires the Department of Justice to appoint an Assistant U.S. Attorney in every judicial district to coordinate and supervise the investigation and prosecution of postal-related crimes, such as assaults and mail obstruction.

- Stricter Sentencing: Directs the U.S. Sentencing Commission to treat the assault or robbery of a postal employee equivalently to an assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

Then like you say...the $$$. Moreso to do with mail receptacles than Carriers other than Carriers not being robbed for the arrow key...which is a definite plus. Should be called "protect Carriers and mail".

- Infrastructure Upgrades: Authorizes $1.4 billion annually (FY 2026–2030) for the USPS to install high-security collection boxes and replace traditional universal "arrow keys" with electronic alternatives.
