MOU Signed to Allow Regular Carriers to Volunteer to Work on Sundays and to Volunteer to Provide Assistance on Other Routes

FWIW, there are carriers who love the MOU and the opportunity it gives them to earn OT. I am not one of them as I'm close to retirement and at this point in my life, my free time is more valuable to me than any OT I might earn. If I were younger and faster, I'd probably be thrilled with it, too.

I heard Shirley Baffa and Bridget Bosneak speak a couple of years ago and they both said that every time that MOU expires there is lots of discussion on whether to renew it. The argument against it is that it leads to abuse (carriers being forced instead of volunteering) and it's a crutch for management to use instead of hiring RCAs. The argument for it is they don't want to cut off the opportunity for rural carriers to earn more.

The MOU has been renewed so often I really expected the terms to be integrated into new contract and I was really surprised to see that it was not. I think the fact that is wasn't, and it continues to be treated as a "special exception" to our work rules, shows the ambivalence of NRLCA.

Ambivalence is not the word I use when discussing the nrlca.....I got a whole long list of words, and most of them are not complimentary to them either...😐😑😡🤠

Maybe things have changed since I was last in the mix, but the last I experienced with the NRLCA, "a lot of discussion" was the National Board having a 5 minute red herring/echo chamber on who last misplaced the rubber stamp.

Premium service for premium pay! Double time or bust for these beyond-emergency situations! 🤑

That whole "MOU abuse" banner is something the union could drop the hammer on, but they seem much more attracted to dropping the ball. I'd like to think that the cost of an arbitrator's response to such abuse should be more than enough to stave the behavior. The absence of that alone displays the weakness of the union's behavior to abandon of the issue on the headquarters-level!

"Maybe if we shame them with a strongly worded letter in our monthly magazine, that will really show "em!"

What kind of union literally, in writing, discourages its representatives from defending its contract, then turns around and cries "abuse" when management tramples on employee rights? 🤔🤦‍♂️🙃.
