I been an rca sub for the last 5 years.  I have an assigned route I do. The lady I sub for is retiring soon and I was wondering if I get first bids. And the only other sub in our office took a route which the regular carrier is out on medical leave. So she's been working that route for over a year now. Just need some advice before she retires.  Thank you

Whoever is senior will get the route when the regular retires. If it's the other RCA then you can request to be transferred as sub of record to the other regular route and work it everyday until that regular comes back. (You would make that request in writing as soon as the regular route is awarded to the other RCA.)

You didn't say if your office was part of an APO/RMPO  if it is then all RCA's in the APO/RMPO offices are allowed to bid the route.

Also their is always a very, very slim chance of a regular within a 50 mile area being excessed and getting the vacancy.

While all of @charlie-brown's statement is correct, I would urge you to bid, no matter what the seniority situation is. (1) it's good practice and (2) if the senior sub screws it up then you end up winning the bid. Otherwise, it could go to a district wide bid and some sub that you've never met could end up with it. So bid on all routes.
