I am a sub in Georgia and am just past my 90 actual worked days. I am struggling with the lack of work/home balance this job has. I thought that I could be considerded or allowed to bid on regular route after this point. I am now being told that it is one year. our office is so overburdened and we do not have any PTF positions. My question is how do I get a PTF position to at least get the benefits I deserve for working more hours than any of our regulars? I get that it has always been this way but this is not right. Not having days off and being sent all over the place. I work between 8-12 hours every day. I would love for this to be my career but not at the cost of my family!

-- Sorry, but you will need to have one year of continuous service as an RCA to bid on a regular rural route.

-- What was your hiring date?

"our office is so overburdened and we do not have any PTF positions.'

-- How many RCAs for how many rural routes in the office?

-- How many K routes without subs?

-- There has to be a minimum of 2 K-routes without a sub to have a PTF position created, and the creation is at the discretion of manglement. Would help if the K route regulars without a sub have submitted the 120-Day notice to get one.

"My question is how do I get a PTF position to at least get the benefits I deserve for working more hours than any of our regulars?"

-- Check Article 30.2.A.3. of the contract.

-- To bid on a PTF position, one has to be posted and you will need to have one year of continuous service as an RCA.

"I work between 8-12 hours every day."

-- If or when you work over 12 hours in a day, be sure to inform your Assistant District Representative.

-- With a work schedule like that, you could very well be making more money than some regulars!

-- While the money may be nice - for a while, it can not replace family time.

-- Keep checking the local job market for something better.

Just some more validation-- you are seeing the situation clearly and you have your priorities straight.
The USPS is spiralling down, many workers are leaving, and many more will be just walking away. The situation in a few years may be different, but for now, the conditions you've identified will only get worse, and wait until the heavier workloads of fall and winter.

You deserve better and so does your family.

Welcome to USPS and unfortunately it will not get any better.
While I agree that OPs treatment and typical USPS BS won't get better.... and probably worse.... what does get better is the actual job. At 90 days I was far from proficient. Now I could do the "mail" part of my job with my eyes closed and 3/4 drunk while watching a movie. The parcels are another story and take a toll on your body but your skills also increase making it much less time consuming.

If I were given the amount of parcels that I regularly get now......10 years ago? I wouldn't be done until 10pm most days.

The "show me the money" crowd voted yes on the new contract which took away the option for you to become ptf @90 days. Sorry, their money was more important than your future.

This was actually a god-send for RCAs like me stuck unable to convert without the PTF step. Now, more PTF postings should hit district.

Disclaimer: there are 5 PTFs now, that have successfully bid over me with SUBSTANTIALLY less total time. I am biased.

I as well as many others, have sacrificed precious time with friends and family through the years. Neglected our own personal time for doctors or simply just a weekend getaway. Missed kids ball games. Wouldn't let kids have friends spend the night because I had to work the next day. I suffered but my kids did too. The little extra money meant nothing without the ability to spend it on the family time together. It was rare to get more than a day here and there. So no true vacations. I kept saying next year would be better. But the kids get older. They get used to doing their own thing. One day you wake up and you're divorced with one kid an addict, you're body is literally broken down and you're still not rich. What's to show? Surgery scars and stress lines and a brain stuck in postal mode. Not sure what that is? Talk to a career carrier..your brain is in 10 places at once no matter what you're doing. No not A.D.D. , it's like a permanent delivery mode in your brain that's second nature now.
Mgmt doesn't care if you have al or sl to use, or a k day that you busted a$$ to earn after wasted years of rca. Your life is nothing. You're a body. Save yourself and your family, go somewhere with predictable hours and hourly pay. You only have 1 body and your family.
