RCA additional routes

There is no rule that RCAs cannot be required to learn more than 3 routes. The rule you might be thinking of is that an RCA cannot be trained on a 4th route unless the rest of the RCAs have been trained on 3 routes.
Eh, I don't like to get in a back and forth about the contract, but Article 30.2.C.2.

That was helpful EthelAnne. I read and see that they don't have to train you but for one route as The carrier only has to cover the route trained for. Unless the supervisor trains you for more routes up to 3 then you're then listed as 2nd in command on the matrix and you're then considered the backup for the other route too and may be called upon to come in. But if they don't train you then you don't have to cover that route unless you desire to.

Well, not necessarily. I recommend you talk to your local steward when you have questions and if you're not sure they're giving you the correct info (they are only human and not walking encyclopedias), contact the Assistant District Representative and see what they say. Good luck.

Read it again… “when necessary….” Means that if mgmt needs you on a route, they can schedule you there.

That says nothing about subs not being required to learn more than 3 routes. That says utilized as in “on a regular basis” (Matrix). Article 30.2.D overrides that when needed. Plus, If a sub runs a route for 1 day, they are considered “qualified“ on that route thereafter & can be scheduled as needed on the route.

True.

Rural Carriers DO NOT earn leave in full days. We earn in “hours” but it is listed on our paystubs in Days & partial days.
Art 30.2.c .2 says RCA may be utilized on up to 3 route. In olden days before no subs available, the more than 3 allowable (as you stated) was ok if every other RCA was allowed to do the same amount. On the matrix there is 3 spots and then an unofficial list of those qualified by seniority who volunteer.

After the sub disappearance, no one enforces Art 30.2.c.2 anymore.

I was talking to a friend of mine several states over. They have subs and don't have amazon. They don't understand most regulars don't care where the leave replacement comes from........ we just want a day off and we want to take annual leave............
Management brings in people from 50 miles away to cover sick days (takes 3 of them even if they have carried the route before) and to keep us from getting OT but will not for relief days or annual. And they wonder why 15 % of the carriers call in sick everyday. None of those from 50 miles away were in office before covid so they shouldn't be allowed. but what do they say about safety? Only YOU can make your work safe LOL

But back to article 30.2.c.2........... it should be eliminated since the 8.5 and 9.2.c.5 puts in that a reg working relief day frees up the sub on that route to be used on any route in the office.

But if they don't train you then you don't have to cover that route unless you desire to.
Umm, no! The post office doesn’t care what you desire to do or not do. As an RCA if you’re told to carry a route, any route then you have to do it. If you don’t then you can face disciplinary action and you won’t able to grieve it. (Demonstrable safety issues would be the only reason allowed to not follow the order)
