Second Round

Our PM was on.a.rampage today. He announced that if we found ANY dps out of order we have to back track on our route and deliver it. I asked him how do we get paid for this? He told me rather abruptly that we didn't, it was our job. Well folks, I could feel the steam brewing!!!!I know USPS tried to mandate this rule at an earlier time but.they were shelling out too much money for this extra task. They were paying at that time, 2 min.a mile plus our mileage. Now it would be 3 min a mile. Also, this only included first class mail, no junk mail.Does anyone know where I could get concrete proof of this so I might be able to win round 2? Thanks so much!

You can try this from The Nat'l Agreement for an argument ;

13. Recurring Work Duties

When daily recurring work duties other than traditional
service functions are added to or removed from a route
after the latest route evaluation, the Employer shall
promptly determine time requirements for such added or
removed duties and authorize any appropriate
adjustment of evaluated compensation

While delivering mail is a traditional service function, deviating is not.

All offices have to have standard throw back cases, if they don't the get in trouble when the higher ups check the office.
Any direct orders to do extra work, outside of normal work duties, comes with pay. And not 3 min/mile, ACTUAL TIME pay on form 8127.
I love these types of orders. I start following them to the letter, literally. I could spend an extra hour or 2 driving back and forth on my route. Then I would charge them on form 8127

I wouldn't think it would be safe to turn around to deliver missed mail. That would require backing up or a u-turn. We've had stand ups where they tell us it's safer to go around the block. Big blocks out in the country. Time and mileage will add up.

What they are trying to do is reduce the amount of raw mail . Notice the timing of this "mandate" ? Right before the MMS. There is a reason that there is 3M case. It is for the mis-sort , mis-sent , and mis-sequenced mail from DPS.
My ADR said that we would still get credit for thise pieces. Will need to keep up with this during MMS.

I have already talked to my ADR he said 3 min a mile plus mileage. Where can I find evidence of 8127 time? Thanks

And do you get paid your 8127 pay in the same period it occurs?

I never do. I have wait 2-3 payperiods at times. I hate it. I feel like I am always fighting to get paid for the work I do.

Its the plants job to get DPS to 98% accuracy, ha ha. You could be out there all day if the DPS is f’d up. Someone must have been on a “list” for this latest stupidity ! Your ADR says you should be back tracking ? As others have stated, I would take an extra hour or 2, mgt will change its tune. Just do it on a day when you nothing going on after work. Good luck.

Any additional (made up) duties from your regular job is paid on the 8127 form, and entered the week it happens.
Your adr is wrong call your district representative. Second trips occur after you return to the office, and are supposed to be for items that didn’t fit in the first trip, not mis sorted Dps. shouldn't be having that many DPS errors, that is the plant's problem, not yours. Your pm is trying to avoid counting your DPS errors by giving you additional work to "fix" them for free. They're still DPS errors and should be counted as such, whether you deliver them that day or not. It is also deparate treatment to require extra work for all carriers taking DPS to the street and not requiring those that case it extra work. I'm guessing the mail not for the carrier that cases their DPS sits in the throw back case until the next day, and nobody delivers that maul. WHY? It is mis sort nail also .
Fix this by filing grievances. Call your Dr and ask them to correct your adr.
If your pm would think logically about this, these daily extra miles should be added to each route, being a daily occurrence. That would build up every route in the office tremendously.

With regard to the 98% accuracy. This is when the carrier requests the QUALITY DPS review. Not to be confused with the QUANTITY DPS review.

And why stop at just back tracking on your route? Why not deliver misorted mail for other routes? How about other offices? It makes no sense. They are delaying mail until the next day everyday in the USPS why not deliver mis sorts the next day?

Your PM sounds like either a ladder climber, or an idiot.

Myself I would follow orders, count every piece I had to take back to deliver track the mileage as well keep up with the time too. Dps is suppose to be walk order so when I got back I'd tell them write down this many pieces. I'd then write everything on my 4240 for that day and when they refuse to pay or credit the letters then I'd dispute and file a grievance. Then end in the long run you will receive credit but at more cost to the po! They crazy but we are smart.
