Mail should be delivered to the Associate Post Offices at night and then the Contract drivers could start picking up mail at the last drop point, retracing the route. Thus making the contract routes one run per day.
Mail could be sorted at night or early in the morning at the Associate Offices before carriers arrive.
This may entail a change on what mail is worked at the plant on which shift.
But it is ridiculous wasteful and that deliveries and pick ups at Associate offices are not done on one run regardless of what time of day that is

I have been told before that Clerks would never be allowed to work overnight sorting mail because of the night shift differential pay.
I don't remember any Rural Carriers getting night shift differential when forced to work late in the night.
Isn't the Clerks contract up for renewal.
Maybe the Post office could get that changed instead of delaying mail.
OOPs I forgot only the Rural Carriers ever give anything up at contract time, MY BAD
