Just curious. Does everyone/anyone turn their vehicle off when carrying a package to the door? The rrecs guide pg 70/71 does not say to turn engine off when delivering a package. It does say to lock the door if vehicle will be out of sight. Pg 75 when serving collection box it says to turn engine off. Not asking what is safer. Looking for loopholes.

postal POLICY is to park vehicle, curb wheels, engage emergency brake, turn off engine and take keys out.
every new employee who will be driving is taught this during the onboarding process.
this information is gone over in safety talks, particularly those regarding rollaway/ runaways.
you will get pulled off your route and possibly fired if caught in violation.
is it worth it to save a few seconds?

Doesn't matter if postal rig or POV... If your rear end is off of the seat then the engine better be off.... refer to above post. Not worth it to leave it running & then have the vehicle drive it self away & injure, kill or damage something.

I used to not do it since the Metris automatically puts itself into park when you open the door. Then they started cracking down at the office, and also installed multiple sensors to track that stuff in the government vehicles.
Do what oi veh said and just cut the engine and make sure the thing is in park. Don't forget the hand brake. Pull the keys out to make sure it's in park.
Yes you'll have to replace the starter sooner rather than later. Your ignition will also get worn out faster. You'll have a job to pay for those things though. Without a job, you and yours are on the street starving.

I have an additional question.
We have a dumpster at work. Is it ok to throw all my mail in the dumpster and then drive home and sleep till my evaluation is done?

I figure I could technically sleep during “out to lunch scans”

I just drive my metris up to the front door and throw the parcel through the window. My customers love the service.
starter on my 2006 Jeep lasted until 2021, so I guess it should have lasted until 2036??? if I had left the engine running?

The standard methods will satisfy all USPS policies and safety requirements.
I understand that to mean, they give us ample time in the defined standards to properly perform the standards to meet USPS policy and safety procedures. Seems being faster and smarter might not be proper performance on some actions/standards. I do understand there is fatigue time and delay also included in the standard....but there is a standard time also associated with that. I understand #3 to mean....we get paid to follow policy and procedure.....so follow policy and procedure.
I also understand the daily standards as an itemized list of averages, so #4, #5, #6, #7 & #8 follow with logical procession. I read all that and assumed our method of performance on the route changed forever.
It baffles me how we haven't encouraged compliance of safety and policy into our performance. Everyone should be performing the same and only certain office standards could be eliminated that would lend to a smaller daily incentive. How do we justify getting a huge incentive on street when there truely isnt much leeway to alter policy and safety? If we receive street incentive, doesn't that suggest going against policy and safety on street?

another who literally ran to the front door.
rurals always shoot themselves in the foot.

YES.....YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY! IF ITS NOT IN THE CONTRACT, YOU CAN DO IT...
Just kidding....Depends. Was that original starter? If original they will last a while. Once you start buying POS chinese stuff you never know what you will get it. Could be 6 months, could be 6 years.

Everyone knows we are supposed to turn off the vehicle. Today vmf left the llv running in the lot to "warm up" i guess? I have witnessed my postmaster talk to at least one individual who was unloading their truck at the dock while the vehicle was running. I have witnessed the previous union steward unloading equipment while the vehicle is running. The rules are selectively enforced. Bottom line is when it hits the fan it is going to be YOUR issue. Leave it running if you want but know what you're gambling with (your livelihood). It's always worth it, till it ain't.
