2 Route office 1-K & 1-H. I have been primary sub on K route for over 10 years and love it. The H route is open for a sub now. Do to circumstances can I transfer to H route without losing senority when a new RCA is hired for the K route? Or would I have to go through the hiring process for the H route? Thank you!

-- Waiting for the "rest of the story"!

-- Let's see if I have this straight --

-- You currently are the sub for the K route, which means you 2 days a pay period. And possibly when the H route regular needs to be off.

-- You want to become the sub on an H route and just work whenever the regular takes annual or sick leave, which could be zero work days for months on end. And possibly fill in on the K route until a sub is hired or transfers in.

-- Office seniority is based on the date you reported to the office, so a new hire will not pose a "threat" in future bidding.

-- Your only "threat" would be someone with a hire date before yours transferring in to fill the primary sub slot on the K route.

-- You are already an RCA, so unless you resign for some reason, no need to go through the hiring process again.

Not really a threat. As long as that transfer is voluntary seniority is based on longest time in that office.

Mailgirl4now - are you saying the H route is becoming vacant and needs someone to carry it every day for some amount of time?

If you are the only RCA in the office, you can become the primary on the H route so you can fill the vacancy. A newly-hired RCA would then become primary on the K route. Or, you could retain the K route as your primary, and still carry the vacant H route, since you are the only one available to do it. The newly-hired RCA would then be hired as the primary on the H route, and will carry it until it is no longer vacant. You would go back to subbing on your K route then. Either way, you retain your seniority for bidding when the time comes.

Personally, I would keep the K route as my primary. It is nearly impossible to hire a new RCA for an H route once they find out they'll never get to work. If you switch your primary to the H route, a new RCA is much more likely to be hired. Then you'd lose out on working every week once the H route is no longer vacant (unless of course, it's going up for bid, and you become the next regular).

If I'm wrong about the H route becoming vacant, maybe you're just looking to retain your seniority for bidding but don't want to work every weekend anymore. In that case, you can switch your primary to the H route, but you would still be subbing on the K route until a new RCA can be hired and trained.

I'm reading between the lines, I think?

You really will take whatever hours you can get, but feel this move might secure a second RCA for the office because they will be guaranteed at least 2 days a pay period! You're feeling that you will never see another RCA in your office if they are trying to hire for a position with no guaranteed days.

Well if I'm wrong, its one heck of a reason and very factual!

Reading between the lines......you will work the h because it will be a hold down for a while, hoping to get a rca on the k route. When not needed on the h anymore you can be off collecting unemployment and get a much deserved break!!!!

The way I read it the H route isn't vacant, it just doesn't have an RCA! But I like the unemployment twist!
