OJI and new relief carriers...

kingu -- " I subbed on a all out the window route and the biggest issues I had was so much of the turn by turns were missing."

On that occasion, I used the turn by turn that was in the drawer; who knows how old that was, but the rural sup didn't have a more up to date turn by turn. She's expressed a lot of frustration with how badly the turn by turns are updated. I work in an all LLV office, more than a few times I've volunteered by POV to deliver with (mostly parcels), but the PM is a city carrier by career, and POV just is a hard sell with him. Since we've pretty much only got enough LLVs to operate all the routes in the office, bringing on extra people means hot seating the LLVs. Which means two thirty or three to get someone to help on the street.

I've never used a turn by turn line of travel. I guess it would be ok if you were on route and not delivering mail. If delivering the mail, how do you know you went 1.5 miles to say Road 1500 where it says take right. Then you find out you should have gone 1/2 mile further to Road 1500 and taken the right there. ( 1 box between where you turned onto 1500 and where you SHOULD have turned on 1500) And all the boxes on Road 1500 are on the wrong side because you turned to early. Much better to follow mail since it's in order.

I've moved to 2 different routes in last couple years. Management doesn't give training to regular carriers so we come in a case and deliver without knowing anything about the routes. If you follow the mail, it's so much easier than trying to read about where to turn. Hmmmm next letter in order says 140 County Road 1800....... hmmmm what's next box ahead......... wait there's a sign saying 1800.......... ok let me turn right ....... the box ahead says 160 ............ so look down in mail to see where 160 is your tray. Ok 140 is behind me so I should have taken a left delivered 140 and U turned and then served 160. Next time you deliver that route even if it's 20 years later, you remember take the left and u turn.

Is it the first 5 paychecks or 1st 5 payperiods?

It's the first five pay periods.

Hmmm. I'm confused about something--since the "five pay periods thing" was included in the contract, I always thought the payroll system calculated from hire date whether or not to pay actual time or evaluation, i.e. management did not have to "tell" the system anything (keep track of hire date or how many pay periods have gone by), I've had a number of boneheaded PMs the past couple years and I've never had an issue with new RCAs being paid accurately for those first five pay periods, other than days they worked not being entered, etc. From what I've experienced, they're well aware of this provision--in fact, I had one RCA quit as soon as the five pay periods were up.

The system does do several things on its own... it’ll pop up a box that says “warning, carrier in excess of blah blah” and it calculates RCA time itself when you put in the times and it triggers an event....
guessing most problems stem from managers who “guesstimate” time cause it’s hard to walk to every case and pick up the 4240, and as the Poom also have access to your time/pay in computer, if there’s problems in house, they tend to wait till Friday to plug it all in to avoid the poom.
Funny how Rural’s are always trying to figure how to do things correctly and I’ve learned more cheating and dubious ways from PMs and city carriers....

This is absolutely correct.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking happened here---the hours were not being entered correctly because some supervisor was faking it for whatever reason (too lazy to check the 4240s, keep the carriers under their evals or, who knows, maybe even screw the RCA out of their time and hope they would not notice) which is why the new RCA was paid evaluated hours, not actual hours.

Turned in copies of three paystubs today to get the evaluated vs actual time fixed. (happened 4 times on the route.) Though it was with extreme satisfaction today, as I finished the route under evaluation for the first time today. (though admittedly, it was because there were only two pumpkins of parcels, 3 tubs of flats/raw mail and 3 trays of DPS, the first rational day of mail volume I've ever had on the route.)
