VERA Rumors

There's a rumor circulating in our office started by a supervisor who is normally a reliable source. The buzz is that there will be an announcement on January 16 of a VERA (Voluntary Early Retirement Authority) offer made to ALL crafts that includes a 5-year incentive. Anyone else hear anything similar?

Yeah, the inclusion of Rural Carriers sounds too good to be true which probably means it's false but in these wacky times, nothing would surprise me. It certainly would make things interesting for folks like you and me who are right on the cusp of retirement!

What does a 5-year incentive mean ? People who have 5 years career would be eligible ?

Not sure. I thought I read if under 60 (55-59), the 5 doesn't " bump" you up to the Fers supplement eligibility.

From a Federal Times article in August.

"On top of creating new business operating units, the organizational modifications include a management hiring freeze to “prepare for future changes” and a request for voluntary early retirement authority from the Office of Personnel Management. That authority allows an agency to temporarily lower the age and years of service requirements for retirement, with the goal of encouraging more employees that are on the cusp of retirement to make that transition."

Not sure. I thought I read if under 60 (55-59), the 5 doesn't " bump" you up to the Fers supplement eligibility.

no, it doesn't.. but the 5 percent penalty for each year under 62 is taken away.. but when you reach your eligibility you will get it.. so if I leave at 56, with 22 years at age 60 I would get the supplement... pretty sure.lol

They need to change the eligibility to 20 years. Our bodies can't take 30 years under these conditions.

Been a LONG time since we were offered anything.... seems like around 2010 or so, they offered a VERA....

I'd like to see them waiving the 5% per year penalty for going before age eligible....

If I recall the way it worked way back when.... they announced it, then you had until like May to accept it, then you had to be gone by about June or July....

I figure it's unlikely they'll offer it to carriers, but anything is possible...

BINGO!!!! You think they are shorthanded now? Just wait til this happens and I know if my office we would have NO SUBS!! They would be dumb to do this IMO.

Staffing in most crafts are already short, with hiring not happening why would they do something like that! If they had young less expensive employees waiting in the wings than maybe it would make sense!

Plus, the virus is causing even more labor shortages ! All crafts are short to begin with !

At the zoom retirement seminar Wednessday this was a major question being asked.

The roomer has been out for several months.

The retirement people say they don't know if true of false.

I don't beleive Rural Carriers have gotten an early out in the past. I also don't know of table 1 and table 2 carriers exesting at the time of past offeres. I was never in a position to collect on it.
