Congress did not establish the agency as a profit-making operation but rather as a core public service whose origins date back to the Postal Clause of the US Constitution. In delivering the mail to every home and business in America six days a week — all for the cost of a postage stamp — the ... Read more

well said... however there is no reason the USPS can't run an efficient operation and price their products competitively in order to generate enough profit to offer employees a competitive wage and invest in a new vehicle fleet and other modern equipment and facilities to ensure that we can continue to provide our public service for years to come.

Under the present system what you suggest is not possible. What changes would you make to make your suggestion possible?

Raise prices across the board. We have a monopoly on first class mail and charge far less than other postal services across the world. Our parcel rates could increase between 40 and 110% depending on the product to be on par with our competitors UPS and FedEx.

You do realize that as you raise prices you decrease volume dramatically. 1st class mail was always the bread and butter item that paid the bills for the PO. The decrease in 1st class over the last 10 years or so is dramatic and going down even more today. We really can't afford to have it completely dissapear!

OK, we can't be bottom feeders and offer premium service at the same time. Defiantly an issue to consider.

Also, no mater how hard we try, we can't compete against email. So, we should not try.

What about geographic limitations. Some places are more expensive to deliver to. Our competition is competing heavily for the less expensive areas. Our competition does not have to deliver to the expensive areas we do.

Some of us suspect that some competitors have even broken parcel delivery down to expensive houses for parcel delivery and send those parcels to the USPS to save money.

Do you have a way to compete against this imbalance?
