I've always wondered how anyone on a rural carrier salary could survive in Hawaii. I guess buy you a little plot of land and put up a tent or maybe one of those little houses.

They do receive TCOLA though... Territorial Cost-of-Living Allowance. Tax-free and applies to Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Tax-free helps, but Hawaii housing can still chew through an allowance pretty fast.

Oh definitely. Was stationed in the Army there and present on and off for 9 years. Lived off-post with allowance so didn't have to feel that financial pain. Took a big hit on higher prices for food, fuel, vehicles, etc...due to transportation costs.

To top it off, Hawaii ranks #1 for total tax burden, with residents paying an estimated 13.3% of their personal income toward state and local taxes.

You practically have to be from there already or make some sacrifices to make it work. It's a nice place to visit...
