Leather Shoes Blues

Yes, I imagine it will pass just like all of their other mandates that remind me of how bossy little children act when they need to feel in control of something, ANYTHING. Anyone ever see that Twilight Zone episode with Billy Mummy, kid from Lost in Space, in which his entire family is afraid of him because they're at the mercy of his childish whims? Ahhhh, yes. Like that. And it's going to cost this Table 4 RCA money which is only begotten with lots and lots of scraping.

Reinforced toe?
No, they aren’t. Regular Sketchers without any mesh work great, too. I go through about 3-4 pairs a year due all the concrete I walk on but they are the only ones I can wear without causing foot pain.

Leather & Leather-like footwear tend to have multiple layers of material which does make them “safer” than canvas or mesh which are usually single-layered. Cuts don’t slice through as easily & chemical spills are less likely to soak through before removing your shoe to save your foot. I’ve Priced the other-material shoes & a lot of them are more expensive than the fake-leather.
I worked in Safety Shoes (steel toe & soft) in my prior life & all the shoes that company sold were All-leather or leather-like. Unfortunately, this “requirement” has been in our rules forever but mgmt has gotten lax in policing the issue as well as dress code. “Too-short” shorts, Tank tops, & leggings are all also not allowed yet people still get away with it from time-to-time.

More safety theater...but if the boss says so, you have little choice normally. The shoe composition in practical situations doesn’t matter, and in the unusual times that it would, probably won’t make that much difference. If you worked at the plant or maybe the vmf I might see a real concern; but let’s be real, the biggest risk of preventable foot damage that leather saves you over mesh or canvas probably happens on phone book week.

City carriers really care about footwear, and among the many angles they attack this standard is by getting a simple doctors note to exempt them. There are other angles of attack if you research it.

Sorry, but a Dr note holds no water. I believe a grievance had been filed & a few months ago, our mgmt announced that no Dr note will be excepted since there are Specialty shoes of Leather or the like available at Special Foot stores. It was almost satisfying because I’d been fighting mgmt for allowing the Dr note excuse that was obvious BS.

Shoe inspection? Never had one of those before lmao
Some of you have the craziest things go on at your offices.
I wish there was some kind of discount we could get on shoes though through the post office.

Bukowski -- " Today was manglement shoe inspection day. "

-- Face it, it will be a battle you will not win. In this case, best to be like the NRLCA -- go along to get along!

"To eliminate slips, trips, and falls, do not wear the following types of shoes on the workroom floor:
Shoes with cloth, nylon, or mesh-woven tops, such as tennis shoes, athletic or jogging shoes (except those with leather or leather like uppers) . . .
Will somebody explain 1. How does a shoe with mesh, cloth or nylon prevent slips, trips and falls?"

-- As you astutely noted thoses particular tops will do little to prevent accidents.

-- Probably manglement is more concerned about getting the blood from your squashed toes or foot on the wheels of crab cages or GPC's or the really big parcel containers. Not that you would be using such equipment.

-- More than likely, an accident might be caused by a clerk - in a hurry - to move the equipment to another spot in the office and across your foot.

-- The clerk might get a slap on the wrist ( slow down ) while you get a cast on your foot.

-- Go with "Windindaface's" suggest, get some el cheapo shoes to keep manglement happy, then switch out on the route. They'll last longer!

-- I believe it was "Windindaface" who had recent visitors who wore shoes that were inappropriate!

-- While you are scratching your head over shoe requirements, ponder Step 4 ( F-54 ), which is basically Appendix A ( p.9 ) from the EL-801 ( Supervisor's Safety Handbook. Footwear. Section 3. Heels and Soles. Shoes should be equipped with heels no higher than 1.5 inches ( measured from the back ) to prevent muscle strain. Apparently "muscle strain" is not a concern during off-duty time.

-- The USPS has little concern over such things as ethics, common sense, or logic.

Just dumb. There are all kinds of athletic safety shoes with steel or reinforced toes that will provide better protection. Hate to mention, but Amazon even has a house brand of these new, so-called indestructible shoes.

I wear these mesh shoes at work, and on the farm. They have what they call industrial and construction soles, and a steel toe. How could they complain? I've stepped on nails without punctures, and been stepped on by a cow with these, without trouble. Yes, the cow thing happens more regularly than you'd think.

i worked construction for a lot of years, (30), and had always thought steel toed boots were good, till i saw a guy get his foot under a pallet of concrete block being set down a little to quickly by a crane. not sure if the steel portion tipped, or was just crushed, but the guy ended up losing his toes over the deal. i haven't worn steel toed since.

My old post master told me once, my foot wear was inappropriate. They were composit steel toes that my factory job bought for all employees that was required to wear steel toes....
I asked my pm “how are these inappropriate?” She stated “the material won’t help prevent foot damage should you drop a heavy box on your foot”... I laughed, and stomped on my own foot as hard as I could, and said “ I’m probably the only person in this post office wearing steel toes. I’m probably wearing the safest shoes in this office. Plus these shoes are slip resistant even in oil, again, my shoes are probably even safer than what your wearing right now. My factory job bought them, I deal with heavier items there then I’ll ever deal with here. If these shoes are good enough for a factory job being around fork lifts, I think they should be fine here too.”.... she walked away and I never heard about my shoes inappropriate......

this too shall pass...on to the next flavor of the week.
Gotta disagree on this one. The clipboard carriers are still checking our footwear two years after their original big stink about the "proper" material. Had to give up my good Merrell trail runner shoes that I'd been wearing for years. Fortunately, Merrell offers some all leather options, but they are not quite as comfortable.

Just remember this applies to proper footwear on the workroom floor. Ergo once in a while take a glance at your bosses shoes call them out if you can. We did on one of the POOMS stooges when the Team was in office. Was a nice slice of Humble pie served because POOM sent them home or the option of go buy a pair and return. They went out and purchased a pair and were back in office later.

It should apply to all who enter the workroom floor. IE customer being let in the back way to pick up their baby fowl every spring. The truckers who drop/pick the office mail. Anyone who walks onto the workroom floor should have the approved footwear on. The workroom floor is anywhere from the back door to the backside of the Front Window Clerk station. If they don't mention it.

One thing seems to be common in my area with those who are into the Social Media thing and chat with others from other offices is... It does not seem to apply to RMPOS. They did not get the shoe talk or memo. This is wrong and our office REP got wind of this and conducted their own informal Social Media Questions. I was informed today they submitted a grievance. My question to REP was .. Who will be shoe snitch out there and will they provide daily pix of footwear worn? Or just say all good here?

-- Hopefully those involved got some nice BIG blisters from the new shoes!

Nice hammer toe you got going on there? Did you look good in your matching outfit? Hammer toe usually develops over time due to arthritis or wearing ill-fitting shoes, such as tight, pointed heels.
