90 days question...

NewbieTexas

New member
So I have got to be just a few weeks shy of making 90 days & I've NEVER called in sick once (& we work 6-7 days a week in my office!), but I called in today (there's a stomach bug making the rounds in my house), & they acted like I needed a doctors note & warned me that I hadn't made 90 days yet! WTH? This is only a 1 day bug I'm sure, so I'll be there tomorrow no problem. But no doctor's office is going to let you come in while you are vomiting AND they were closed anyway due to the holiday! Why do they have to be so rude about this?

They were probably rude because it was chaos at the office and of all days to be sick today was probably in the top 5 don't-be-sick days of the year.

NewbieTexas --  sick and doctor's note warning

--  While seeming to be rude, manglement was just following the contract ( for a change ):

--  An RCA's probationary period is either 90 work days or 1-calendar year, which ever comes first.   Page 47 of the new contract.

--  Sickness:  For periods of absence of three ( 3 ) days or less, a supervisor MAY ( probably not ) accept an employee's certification as reason for absence.  Page 21 of the new contract.   ( if manglement requires a doctor's note, ask for time and travel to the doctor's office and also ask the doctor to send a bill to the post office for third party requests for medical documentation -- as others have )

--  Regarding the warning ( or threat ):  The Employer shall have the right to separate from its employ any probationary employee at any time during the probationary period, and these probationary employees shall not be permitted access to the grievance process in relation thereto.  Page 22 of the new contract.  ( walk the straight and narrow as you fair game for now )

--  Despite the above, you have the Post Master General on your side as last year she decreed that RCA's are to be "kept at all costs."    If manglement deems is necessary to let you go, request to see the letter to the PMG explaining why.

--  The next time you have a stomach bug, try to make it to the office and be sure to stand near the supervisor's desk whenever you feel queasy - just in case.

During your 90  actual working days (or 1 year)  they can separate you for any reason.

However....unless you are a "Problem Child" they will probably get over it

More than likely the Stupervisor was already down a carrier and your calling out messed up their evening plans.  OFW.

I wouldn't make it a habit to call out when you are new (if you want the job).  But lets be real.....people get sick.

I am one of those that works sick (I know.....but I hate sitting around)  Worked thru a gall bladder attack (went to ER 2 days later for emergency surgery), and an facial infection that exploded while I was delivering.  I basically need to be losing blood to call in.  But that is me. YMMV

Last we all heard......RCA firings were handled at the District level.  So you should be fine.
