Annual Leave with no leave replacement

RCA33

I hold a 6 day aux route and there is 2 other aux routes in my office. My post master approved one of the other aux Rte holder this Saturday off. We have no other RCA's to cover the route. So without asking us our postmaster put me and the 3rd aux Rte holder on the schedule to split her route. Can my postmaster do this and can I refuse to do it?

Possibly.

Since they are aux routes they are all probably under 8 daily hours.

They cannot schedule you for more than 12 hours in a day.

Also, they cannot require you to work more than 12 hours in a day, and that includes your 30 minute break.

Even if she never gave us any notice? My post master never put the schedule up for this coming week until today?

Also when I took leave on a Saturday my prior PMASTER told me I needed to ask my fellow aux route holders if they would cover my route, and if they said no then I would be declined my leave time. So I have no idea who is right.

RCA33....me thinks you need to do what your PM tells you.  I can't see a grievance here.....or less you are being scheduled for over 12 hours.  When do they usually put up the schedule???  Is it a established practice?  Also as a RCA you can be called in the same day as needed, so given two days notice is nice.  I know, not what you wanted to hear.......but the PM really doesn't need to run it by everyone before he makes out the schedule.  It would be nice if everyone could be happy a fellow carrier got a Saturday off..........who knows it may be your turn one of these days to have a Saturday off.

I didn't get into it but there's 3 regular routes and 3 auxiliary routes in my office. I also have no problem doing the extra work, but the girl that is taking this Saturday has been there for a year and 1/2 and has had more Saturdays off than me and the other aux route holder that has a combine of 13 yrs into the post office. Also in the last 4 wks on Saturday she has had to leave early, called out, and now getting leave time, while when I needed a saturday off I had to ask my other co workers if they would do my route for me, and if they said no I got declined. So you can see I'm a little irritated by it!

Also she has called out 4 days in the past 2 wks. Other things she has done is when I had filled in for a K route and she split my route she has left packages in my customer's bushes near their box a 1/2 mile from their house, left packages out in the rain, leaves bundles of 3rd class mail for you to deliver the next day and case, and many other things. So I really can't stand helping out her so she can go enjoy a saturday off! Sorry for the rant just a little back story on how this carrier does her job. Not very good!

As far as the rca that is getting the day off being a lousy sub, it really doesn't matter, because your pm gave her the day off. You are not being asked to help her you are being given a direct order in the way of the schedule.

The real problem that I see in the situation you described, is having 3 aux. routes in an office that only has 3 regular routes. These aux. routes should be made into a couple of regular routes and you should become a regular and tell this rca "you are working for me". If you don't have a steward, go on the NRLCA web site and find the steward for your area, you don't have to be a member to get that information, but ask a steward to look into this mess for you and you might become regular sooner than you thought.

It is not your job to ask other employees to do your route when you need time off, that is the PM's job to get routes covered.

Schedules are supposed to be posted by WED, but the unfortunately the ppl in charge of these post offices dont follow the rules in many cases.  I think it is very rude and unprofessional for the schedules to be posted at the last minute.

Regarding crappy employees, it sounds as if your PM need to do some work with that employee.

Yeah well the reasoning for so many aux routes is it is a office that contains 3 different towns within one PO from the Usps trying to save money so one town has a K, J, and an aux the other town has a K and an aux and the 3rd has an aux (which is mine) and a HC route. I have talked to our steward about combining my route and the HC route, but the head of the Union to the steward that they need to wait until the HC contract is up before they can proceed further.

OK, I'm dumb, what's an <strong>HC route</strong>?

Cliff Clavin -- "what’s an <strong>HC route</strong>?"

--  Probably a "<strong>H</strong>ighway<strong> C</strong>ontract" route.

--  You'd been dumb not to ask -- IMHO.

On a side note, how/why is there 3 aux routes in one office?  Shouldn't they be consolidated to make at least one regular route?  </blockquote>
Probably DUO'd together with different zip codes.

A HC route is a Highway Contract route and is paid only by the mile and by the boxes.  They don't have the rules we rurals have and are not USPS employees.  HC routes have no benefits of any kind........money only.  They paid their own state and Federal taxes, insurance etc etc.
