DPS to the street works if your plant doesn't give you 6 other offices stray mail, other routes in your office pieces and mail that fell out and was tossed in anywhere in the DPS from the plant worker. Plus like what happened this Monday, it helps when the plant actually 'forgets' to send the mail with the truck and it sits there for hours until they find someone else to bring it to your office.
I spend half hour to an hour a day. Management knows not to text or call me on route. 20 minutes or more a day is answering questionsAre you redoing your case labels every evening?
.This is the longest running debate on the rural side! It all depends upon each route's situation, including the type of delivery, the flats and letters each day, etc.
Our hundreds of carriers in our offices almost always case in the office, as most delivery is curbside single box planned development. We have coverage, EDDM, high volume flats and letters daily. Exceptions are typically businesses, those routes with CBU. Nearly every customer gets mail daily. Their CC&R's specify they must keep boxes clear for delivery.
FYI I started as a dual and carried city for years, so I'm capable and fast taking to the street too. Most of us find it slightly faster to case in office (we don't "handle twice" as once it's cased in a "taco" it's a single bundle and we never see the letters again. Most don't ever look at the mail as the very few boxes who get no mail are marked with a card) We also find it safer as our eyes are up instead of mostly down in the LLV. It also minimizes chatter between customers and carriers, as they're not stopped at boxes nearly as long which reduces the chance of engaging in conversation. Our carriers don't sell stamps, perform special services that many carriers in truly rural environments do.
Having also worked out of state on truly rural routes, with 600 DPS for 1200 deliveries and few flats, it's by far faster and easier to take it out.
And city carriers in our offices are envious that we have the choice to case inside.

1 tray sorted in office takes me 15 mins per tray.
There is no way for me to gauge how much time it is taking me on the street to sort through it. If we all took it to the street and verified every piece at each address, then maybe the verify address standards might be higher. I know I am skimping on my office duties to get myself out the door. I always wonder if I am taking longer in street time because verifying address should be worth more.
Maybe some higher up postal guru knows.
God forbid our office standards ever decrease or some disappear all together. My own analytics would have helped put a nail in that coffin. I know this yet, I continue to perform this way because I want a life outside of work. Being selfish and trying to get through just like the rest of us.
We are truely in a bad way by my estimation.

and that is exactly why they are not.
the majority of the study offices spent time on tasks not included in our evals, i.e., casing DPS, instead of doing tasks the way we are supposed to as outlined in the PO-603.
so thank your fellow carriers as well.
the same ones who worked (and continue to work) off the clock which also contribute to the erosion of standards.

There is no way in shell that i could have put up a full tray of mail in 3 - 5 minutes. Back when I did case the letters, when I would time myself, were talking 20 minutes per full tray.15 minutes per tray???? WHHAATTT??? Its been years since I cased the letters. Only the few times that a tray was missing from the previous day do I get the PIA of casing letters.

I don’t know it’s dream or not and it’s nothing compared to your work period , but I have worked 2 hours more than my 44k evaluation last week . And this happened after quite a long time . Probably after about year and a half including last Christmas period

I don't care how people carry dps. I just wish two sets of data had been collected to apply to routes. Those casing shouldn't be tied to street sort. Those sorting on the street shouldn't have cased DPS as the standard for time manipulation.

Management respond to your time sheet is.
1. why is it you are constantly late
2. you need to take your DPS to the street
3. we need you to have less office time when you come back
4. you need to show us longer break times

In my old office, they made us case it for 10-12 years, and then all the sudden, we werent making our leave times, and...WWAAAA-LLAAHHHH, everyone was being made to take it to the streets...that was mostly pre-covid, and
A-zon....but my old rt was set up perfect for throwing it in....2 addresses per slot, and apts. all in in one a handful. Not every rt is the same, that's for sure. I also had 4 slots for 2 addresses in the suburbia areas, you can get rid of a lot out of a handful in cases set up like that. Set it up right, and you can make it lots faster, and easier fo yourself. My friend I used to work by, a sweet little old lady, it would take her 35-45 minutes, per tray, and she never got back before 5- 5:30 ish....EVER.
When I was subbing for her, I was done at 1:30pm every day, and noon very occassionally. A good set up on your rt is very important, but innate skill, and quickness, are also part of the factor too.
Just my thoughts on it...

I hate raw mail....but, it is what it is...some rts. arent set up for easier casing. The person I sub for now, has one divider, for every address, and some addresses combined two to a slot. Uuggghhh....also tons of vacant addresses sprinkled throughout her case. I almost never case it, and I can pull down WWWAAAYYYY faster than anyone in the office, the rt. is a conglomeration of 3 aux rts, and the dps is not running in the correct order, so I have to put it in the correct order, but it's fine after that. She's super nice, but very comfortable with how it's set up, and not likely to change it...ever. There is a lot that could be done to clean the rt. up, and simplify it....but not too likely until things change.
