Get a beater...1500-2000k....market is pretty tough for used cars but if you're only using it once a week get a beater...that's what I did..for decades...First time poster, sorry if this has been discussed before. I tried searching the forums but couldn't find anything.
My PM has been riding my ass about this. The primary route I sub on was assigned a Metris van early this year, and I usually only get 9 hours a week. So I had to sell the POV because I literally can't afford the vehicle note and insurance just for the possibility of work.
The PM insists I have to buy a POV to cover other routes in the office. Does anyone have a clue as to what the answer is here? I'm so tired of being pestered over this lol.
Pressure from higher management to send subs to other offices is usual cause here. Multitudes of 2080 problems here so trying to work the RCAs to death sending them everywhere. Some routes not getting delivered everyday. Some PMs are carrying to cover a route. No subs to be had. Locally 22,000 listed job openings with 8000 potential applicants. You do the math. No one is looking at the postal service as a career, only a job until they find something else that isn't as much work and the postal service is no longer paying enough above the local pay rates to even be considered.Funny how they will pull out that "its in your job description" stuff and expect a sub to adhere to it, while failing to fill multiple open sub positions to keep the office staffed to a reasonable level.
I have read that if a government issued vehicle is provided, that a back up vehicle is recommended but not required.First time poster, sorry if this has been discussed before. I tried searching the forums but couldn't find anything.

not even recommended. that would be management's rainy dream.I have read that if a government issued vehicle is provided, that a back up vehicle is recommended but not required.
I used to have and be required to maintain a POV as a sub, and the vehicle was WAY, WAY expensive to maintain back in the day. I shudder to think what it must cost to maintain a route vehicle in today`s dollars. Currently, they dont really pay new people enough to justify the cost of keeping a route vehicle. Plus, there is the issue of parts availability.....what if the POV is down and in need of repairs and the particular part you need is overseas?? I know people who cannot get their household appliance fixed or their vehicle fixed because of this. What happens then?......Just sayin' that it really isn't realistic. I have seen management provide LLVs for subs who are assigned to a POV route. Its the smart thing to do if you want to keep your personnel. It probably depends on your postmaster more than anything.
I was hired when there was only 1 LLV for 11 routes. Over the course of the next 5 years LLVs were issued and only 4 POV routes remain… 2-3 are on a Metris wait.
I kept my old POV just in case I needed to use it, and for when I became full time.
We had a sub go full time without ever having to use a POV until he went full time and was made to get one. When he was assigned to a POV route, they gave him a City LLV and made city use a Promaster.
RCAs are hired to work for a city. While they may have a primary route in an office in that city, they are required to have a vehicle that they may be required to use to deliver mail. That’s why RCAs start out making more an hour than a CCA.I would challenge the answers above, Not saying you are wrong, however, when a RCA is hired they are hired for a particular route. And if that particular route has a government issued vehicle, which is stated in job description, in all logistics they are not required to provide a vehicle. Just a bit of food for thought. All RCA in our area have sold POV because of assignment of government vehicle even though 1-2,rtes in an office may still be POV
My experience: It's absolutely NOT worth it to beat up your personal vehicle. It's NOT worth it to invest in a new route vehicle. Many thanks to everyone who replied. I finally managed to speak with a couple stewards from different cities and they're looking into it. Idk. I've made less than 10k so far this year, and honestly never made enough to save anything during the 4 years I've worked here. I put in several job applications today to see if I can find work outside the PO. Can't be more aggravating than this crap lol.
I agree with this, if you are working a route with an assigned postal vehicle you do not need to provide your own.I would challenge the answers above, Not saying you are wrong, however, when a RCA is hired they are hired for a particular route. agree... neutral arbitraitor would/could look at determining factors of ema formula... nowhere will he/she find the allocation for 2nd ride or standby ride... but it's the union we all know and love(not)I agree with this, if you are working a route with an assigned postal vehicle you do not need to provide your own.

Sell your pov, tell your PM to give their ride to you when you work one of the other pov routes in your office. It's the PM's problem. Not your primary. If the PM stands by it, he will have to make all the RCA's in the office buy a pov. If they don't, file a grievance.First time poster, sorry if this has been discussed before.
