Assigned Route & 6 day work week

Can a supervisor tell a regular that they need them to work their off day without explanation? The carrier has a sub and that sub is working a different route in her designated day due to 2 other carriers requesting leave.

With 5 subs and 17 routes, can subs be forced to work a 6 day week just to cover AL for 3 carriers. Or should AL be denied?
This shorts the sub on money, especially with working Amazon Sunday.

Yes a regular can be forced to work their day off but Mgmt. must follow the order of consideration. First any regulars on the RDWL then if the need still exists any regulars that may volunteer after that they can force in a regular by juniority.

Subs can be forced in 7 days a week if needed and annual for a regular can NOT be denied if a sub is available.

I'm not sure how a sub working 6 days a week is getting shorted any money. Now if that sub is used to working and blowing through the routes to stay under 40 to get the evaluation then maybe. Here's the thing, if Mgmt. hasn't hired and you're working multiple routes because there's not enough subs then take your time and do everything required and do it safely. Maybe when Mgmt. has to start paying you 40 hours regular and 15 or 20 hours overtime they'll think about hiring.

Another thing, the carrier that has a sub, that sub isn't his. That sub is assigned to the route.
The regulars in your office without subs assigned to their routes need to fill out and submit 120 day letters. (as an attempt to force Mgmt. to hire)
With 5 subs for 17 routes I suspect your office may be looking at going "formula" at some point in the future if they're unable to hire, bad for the regulars but at least some (probably 1-3) subs would be converted to PTF (at least that's career status)

Do you have an office steward?

No office steward. We have one PTF, always have. All the routes I know well and sub on are 9hr routes. Sunday is hourly. Then lately they’ve thrown me on routes blind, always with circulars, 70 to 100 miles and scoff if I’m not back by 5. My point being, bc they failed to hire new rcas in FOREVER, My hourly time, while being over 40, is still not the full evaluated time 45+.
I have had to go back out 5 times in the month. I haven’t ever had to do that. Last check was 40.37 actual hours in a 45 evaluated work week.

Say I do 4 days of 9 hours routes and finish them in 33 hours and then work 7 and a half hours of Amazon, then I’m getting 40.5 hours paid when I should get 43.5.

If I work 5 days of 9hr routes and finish in 39 and then 7 hours of amazon I’ll get 46 on my check instead of 52.

We understand the 40.000001 dilema. What we are saying is slow down. Assume you'll go over 40. Take the OT.

As an rca, you get overtime after 40 hrs not after the evaluation of 45

As mentioned, you always have to be very careful about your 40 hours.

RCA hourly rate: $17.78
RCA OT hourly rate $26.67

In your case you work 5 days on a 9.0 eval route = 45 hours. Get done all week in 39.99 hours or less. Obviously you get 45 x $17.78 = $800.10

If you get into overtime you must work 43.33 hours to make the same pay. 40 x $17.78 = $711.20 3.33 hours OT x $26.67 = $88.90. $711.20 + $88.90 =$800.10.

IOW, if you work less than 43.33 hours you are costing yourself money. I never understood this why, unless someone is coming in far under 40 hours, some one will risk working ie 40.56 hours and taking a huge cut in pay.

-- Let manglement scoff all they want. If they don't like your performance, ask them for pointers or just invite them to carry the route!

-- Be sure you are getting Actual Time if on the route for the first time or if you have not worked the route in over a year.

Most postmasters or supervisors have no idea how to do this on payroll.

never have I worked a first time route and didn't have to wait at least 2 extra pay periods for the actual hours pay. even writing it clearly with highlights on pay sheet. Most people don't know and or forget about it. Been at least 3 instances where I was never paid. I simply never go back to that office if asked again...and state why.

My solution with your scheduling scenario, was to work faster and take 30 minute lunches on the 4 x 9 hr route days, and finish within 20-30 minutes on the 5 x 9 hr route days...lunch time adjusted as necessary, but at least 10 minutes. Call it gaming or what you will...money talks back.

I don't disagree with this but what if there is such a volume of mail one day...or 2 that it shoves you into the 40.0001

Ok, had a similar conversation yesterday with our aux carrier. She says no matter how many hours she goes over 40 on aux route she only gets paid the eval. It's route assistance that puts her into overtime. I disagreed, is she right?
I/m not sure about this...how big an aux?
