Can rural carriers wear clothes that resemble or are the city carriers uniform with the Usps logo if it’s a personal purchase? Our office is banning rural from wearing anything logo usps - city is saying we aren’t authorized and management is going along . Any of you wear city clothes to work?

Wearing postal uniforms is prohibited under the following circumstances:

  1. A person not connected with the letter carrier branch of the Postal Service who wears the uniform or badge worn by a city carrier is fined not more than $100, or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both. When employees are separated from the Postal Service, all emblems, buttons, or other identifying insignia must be removed before the uniforms are discarded.
Title 18 U.S. Code , sub and section 1730 pretty much says the same ;

What is their problem with it? I have some t-shirts and a hoodie with usps logo. I’ve seen several rural carriers over my career wear a uniform. I’ve always thought it was a good thing that I probably should have done because there were a couple times when I’ve walked up on a resident that doesn’t recognize me as the mailman & and seen the fear of death in their eyes.

That’s funny that your management is going along. Thought about it and the the former rurals that I remember wearing a uniform are now in management.

Many city carriers have a real problem when rural carriers wear their uniforms. They will grieve it and they will win, you are not allowed to wear their uniform at work if you are not a city carrier. Been this way for a long long time!

I have never heard a city carrier beach about what somebody else wears in my 37 years at this place. What kind of nimrods are there out there and what is the objection to it? Afraid a rural carrier is gonna get their perks at Waffle House?

I guess maybe some nefarious supervisor might try to get an RCA to carry a pivot to lessen OT for city but that they could get paid for nothing if they found out about it.

The provisions of the preceding paragraph shall not apply to an actor or actress in a theatrical, television, or motion-picture production who wears the uniform or badge of the letter-carrier branch of the Postal Service while portraying a member of that service.

There is also a Step 4 , U-25.600 , which states in part ;

Brookfield Uniform and other postal uniform vendors are prohibited from selling certified postal uniform garments to employees who have been determined ineligible for a uniform allowance [ that would be rural carriers ]. Also: Sales personnel at Brookfield Uniforms were instructed not to sell to rural carriers because of the increasing crime with people wearing the postal uniform.

I think this has more to do with non usps employees than other crafts. It may be the letter of the law but that is to prevent imposters. Since rurals are connected to the letter carrier branch we’re good to go.

That last sentence is asinine. I’m sure it was rural carriers ordering uniforms for criminal activity.

I can see not wearing the CITY CARRIER uniform as we are not city carriers we are rural carriers...but I see no problem if a rural carrier wears USPS clothing to some degree...IMO it promotes the company as well as safens the rural craft saying we DO WORK for USPS and are rural carriers...some stuff is just COMMON sense!

Years back the city steward filed a grievance on us for wearing a city shirt.

They won the grievance.

As time went on their llv tire mysteriously deflated before they hit the street.

You cannot wear city uniforms.

However, buying sweatshirts or tshirts that say USPS with logo I don't believe are in the same category. The carrier isn't wearing a "uniform" but an article of clothing signifying where they work. On the job, not anywhere else. City carriers are required at all times to wear uniform from cap to shoes and all outerwear as well.

I do believe rural carriers have signage for their vehicles with USPS logo, correct? They're surely not LLV's, or Metris....but officially utilized vehicles for work.

ELM experts? what say you?

rural carrier attached to the letter carrier branch is about as asinine as a HCR carrier saying they are attached to the letter carrier branch because the contract holder subbed it out the the HCR carrier. And I think it's actually illegal for rural carriers to use the trademarked eagle and colors of the USPS on their personal vehicles outside of work. US Mail carrier and other things similar are ok as long as no eagle or colors.

Why do city carriers care what rurals wear?

I'll ask some of em and see if they give a rip.

I would have liked to have not answered the question for the 987th time: where's your uniform?
They usually had a bewildered look on their face when I told them if I wore the uniform you'd have to wait 6 more hrs to get your mail
