Hello. I'm making this thread because management came down on someone in our office for returning a business' overflowing mailbox "unclaimed" after 10 days. They're now telling us that we have to go inside the business and talk to them/hand deliver them the mail if their mailbox gets full, and we can't just return it because apparently it costs the PO too much money when we do that and it's bad customer service.
My question is, are businesses really supposed to be treated differently than residential addresses when it comes to overflowing mailboxes? And if so, where does it say that? I was trained that standard procedure is to pull the mail, hold it 10 days, and then return it "unclaimed" like the carrier in our office did.
Also, how about vacant cards and businesses? When a business moves out, do you wait until the new business fills out the vacant card to begin delivering again? What if they never fill it out? I'm mainly asking this because I heard a carrier say that we're not even supposed to use vacant cards for businesses and that we're supposed to just deliver. Is that really true? I was surprised to hear it because I was trained that we're not supposed to deliver until the vacant card is filled out (regardless of it being a residence or a business). What is the correct procedure here?
