DPS Letters for credit in Column 1...

From Mail Count Guide, Column 3:

<em>If carriers take DPS mail directly to the street, all the DPS mail they bring back, because it is out of sequence or otherwise not deliverable (hold mail, forwardable mail, missorted mail, etc.), is recorded in Column 1, Letter Size. <strong>The fact that the carrier may elect to case that mail during the mail count does not change the re-cording procedure. DPS mail, which would have been brought back by the carrier, is recorded in Column 1, Letter Size.</strong><strong>The mail pieces recorded in Column 1, Letter Size, are not deducted from Column 3, DPS Letters.</strong></em>

My mgt peep acted like we were not supposed to get this letter piece count in Column 1 for everything pulled out of DPS, but only get the markup credits... are they nuts, or is it me???  <img title="Confused" alt="Confused" src="https://www.ruralmailtalk.ruralinfo.net/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-smileys/sf-confused.gif" />

I case DPS, and you are absolutely right D.B. I went through this with my counter the last time and she wouldn't believe me until it was confirmed by a higher up. And 2 days later she wouldn't believe me again. And again the following week. I didn't enjoy counting.

Riffle time has nothing to do with casing or not casing DPS. It is simply pulling a tray off the bread rack, checking front-middle-back for correct route & sequence, & put into a conveyance. Do this for all trays without stopping the clock AND if you must search or pull other route trays from yours, the clock keeps going. Riffle time stops when you finish putting the last tray in your conveyance.

You're right, DB.  You get credit for DPS undeliverable mail whether you case it or take it to the street.  Don't forget this also includes DPS letters for businesses closed that can't be delivered (schools, dr. offices etc.).  You get Column 1 if there are <=7 pieces and Column 6 if its 8 or more.

If your counters refuse, I'm betting you'll bring back not just a lot of undeliverable, but there will be a ton of inverted as well!  Good luck.

My whacked out mgt peep today said only peeps taking DPS to the street would get riffling time... and they said riffling time equals 15 seconds... not 15 seconds per tray, but 15 seconds TOTAL...  DOH!?!?  so I guess the little Auxy Rt gets 15 seconds and then the biggest route with several DPS trays gets 15 seconds...  <img title="Confused" alt="Confused" src="https://www.ruralmailtalk.ruralinfo.net/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-smileys/sf-confused.gif" />

--  Hopefully you have your ADR on speed dial!

--  Have the carriers add that to the list of reasons why they will not be signing off on the count numbers.

--  Sounds like a couple of miserable weeks ahead.

--  By all means, keep track of the number of DPS trays over the count period - preferably on the 4240.

In our office we are timed to riffle through all trays until we are done. No one takes it to the street. As we are casing we pull everything that would not go into the address slot. This includes moves, premium forwards, holds, mail not on your route, any markups, mail that needs stamps cancelled, and upside down mail in a separate pile. Riffling time is important even if you case it up because you need to make sure all the trays are for you. Suppose you have a tray for someone who takes their mail to the street and they drive 10 or 15 miles just to get to the route and another 5 as they deliver before realizing they are a tray short. And you haven't noticed it yet because it was on the bottom of your stack. A lot of time lost. It's amazing how petty management is, and then through the year they will ask us to do all kinds of things they wouldn't allow during the count.

^^^Yes.  Anything that comes out of your DPS is considered raw letters.
