Flip windows

I thought long and hard to have a flip window. The $165 is too much but the idea of making my own is so daunting. I know plexiglass is hard to cut and hubby doesn't have the right tool (or maybe he is just too intimidated to try). Of all the different kinds of saws he has, none is for plexiglass. We could have ended up spending on the materials for our trial-and-error experiments.

So I went with this instead. It's not as good but it somehow does most parts of the job.
It fits perfectly, it looks good, and only $65 (give or take).

UPDATE on the price : Weather Shades are only $69.95 plus $15 shipping, totalling $84.95.

I think I had it for $50 plus $15 shipping thus, $65 total.
Also, postal things only make for Jeeps; I don't think they could do a customized one for my van (or any other vehicle for that matter).

A simple low cost way to cut Plexiglas (in a straight line), buy a fine tooth, cross cut, plywood, circular saw blade. Install on circular saw in the reverse direction and only have it lowered 1/4 of an inch through the thickness of the Plexiglas. For curves, a hand coping saw works well!

Didn’t realize it was almost midnight. Plastic cutter was a no go so I broke out the trusty dremel.

Lucky cut the lexan pretty clean. @MiddleOfNowhere you weren’t kidding about the price. Those 2 I posted earlier were $22 a piece and were the smallest size. Medium was out of stock so I’m going to have to piece it together some how. Overall 2ish hours working to this point.

Pretty happen with the progress. Once I get the form on the door I’m going to set the mounting screws. Plan to possibly use caulk or weather stripping to prevent a waterfall into the cab. Then once mounted it should be easier to work it out in a convex shape. Plus side when I tint it should be a good amount of shade too. ?

Sorry @Panhead69 for hijacking the plane. I got a bit carried away. ?

Did you come up w a final product??? I want to see it!

not a flip window, but closes off the top half, so when window is rolled up halfway, it is completely sealed off. i have automotive weatherstripping on edge, so it seals, and is a cushion if my arm rub against it. bottom sits in rubber track on the inside, and is taped in place on edges. originally cut it to shape of window rolled up part way, which allowed clear view of mirror, but have since added a small piece of lexan to close off airflow even more, to help with a/c and heat control. cut the plastic with a 5" angle grinder, with an 1/8 abrasive metal cutting disc. easy to cut arch shape, or straight line. i have to replace duct tape, every 3-4 months. window can be rolled up all the way to lock vehicle securely if i need.
i've used this design on half a dozen vehicles over 25 years. no fighting the flipped up door, when pulling your arm back in.

what do you do when you have a package bigger than the window opening?
It might sound a dumb question but I'm asking anyway . :p

most pkgs. that will fit in a mailbox, will go through, but occasionally if there mailbox is huge, i can roll past and open the door, to fit a pkg in, without dismounting. i'm thinking it is about 8 inches by 16 inches open, with extra piece added in.

Could you send me instructions to make this and the parts needed ... I have a crv...thank you

I am amazed at the ingenuity and craft skills some have from pics posted. The only times I spent working on my POV after work, was to do repairs so I could go to work and deliver,

I am old school and I just deal with the frozen or hot days. JS... They offered to purchase me the LLV winter insert ice cream window. I passed on it without regrets.

Did you make these yourself? I would like one lol

anyone have experience with these flip windows? Good or junk?
First year as RCA I got one took it off within a week….it keeps water off you…. You push your arm through well enough to put mail in box …. But on way back in you have to use two hands one to keep plexi pushed out while you pull your arm back in without being rubbed by the plexi . I got rid of it after a few days . Now I keep a towel behind seat wo wipe up sprinkles that come in and put trash bag on right leg if rains to hard …
