Fun Situation

I just love being so shorthanded and regular carriers who don't care about RCA and their work schedule.

Situation: This past Saturday & Monday, I had to aux route and regular route due to vacations. So that Saturday was my day I was suppose to work for my regular route I sub on (J route).

So my carrier got an X day, which he couldn't use on Monday since both vacations went into Monday. So he was going to use on July 6 (day after holiday on 4th)(Don't get me started on how ridiculous I thought that was since I was forced to work them 2 routes because I am the only sub left in 5 route and 1 aux office total between all satellite offices.)(I was really ticked off when I heard that was his plan with that X day)(I get they can do whatever they want, but it is what it is I guess)

Well the issue is this. One guy filed for July 6th off back in January and was approved (At the time we had 3 subs including myself). One transferred and the other had to resign for reasons) so that leaves just me. Well now my regular carrier I subbed for is all mad because he can't use the X day that day and is supposedly filing a grievance. I'm just like I can only work one route people. I believe the one who asked for day off has more seniority than my regular does. Maybe you all need to talk about days you want off so we can all get through this in one piece because at this rate if they hire no one there will be a crap ton of grievances filed and I'll be one wore out RCA. I'm slowly starting to hate my job because of stuff like this.

Your office sounds like ours! 6 routes, 1 sub. It is not an easy situation for you or the regulars. What has helped in our office is that the regulars openly communicate with each other AND involve our only rca in those discussions. Everyone needs time off and everyone needs respect including subs. What has helped is that our pm, rather than totally overburdening the sub, will run a route, run parcels, or run pieces of a route when needed. We are drowning during this covid Christmas, but at least we will drown together, management included. Does the pm help you guys or is he/she "above" it all?

Our PM really doesn't help out on the routes (not that I can recall at least but I think he would do that), but we have only been shorthanded for a month right now like this. PM does help out with the mail, packages, and that in the morning.

That's my biggest thing that all these people know each other and should be talking it out and figuring out the schedule instead of it changing multiple times in a week or ending me having to work aux and regular route in the same day. (Depending on the route, it isn't that bad). It is like well I want this day off. Well so and so has taken it. They get mad and all that.

Is the Aux route currently vacant? If it were me, I’d jump on running the Aux route full time. The reason is, management cannot schedule you to do two routes in one day if it’s going to be over 12 hrs. Aux routes are also afforded the ability to be able to run the route fully before assisting elsewhere. That means they can’t ask you to help case in the office before your Aux route has been completed.

It would be nice if we could all get along, but the reality is there are always office pets and preferential treatment and that creates a lot of angst over the years. Finally you realize that no one cares about you in the office except you. That said, I try to keep a good relationship with as many as I can...but there are some that are a lost cause. We can’t run this service if no one want to work here and it seems management‘s #1 purpose is to ensure it stays that way.
As a regular I try to remember always how it was as a sub and treat them accordingly. We all have lives that do not revolve around every little thing at work.

Aux route isn't vacant, but that I believe will be the next route to open up which I am going to take.

Management gets to choose the day unless it's an X day for option 1 or what we call code R.
Management does not get to "choose" the X day...it is mutual agreement. They can say no to your request, BUT so can you if you don't like a day they try to "schedule an X day". Honestly, I usually take whatever day I can but not how it has to work. Also, get a signed leave slip. No reason they can't do a leave slip for an X day.

9.2.c.5.f (2) x day within 12 week AS scheduled by employer This language is referred to as Code 3
9.2.c.5.f (1) an x day to me immediately scheduled by mutual agreement.......will be given the same condsideration as approved annual leave This language is referred to as Code R And as it states, you both agree to a day (should be done on 3971) and you are OFF regardless. You have an approved leave slip!
