Health Insurance

Before I became a regular I got health insurance through the post office, not the union. Just for myself I think it was around $50 per pay period. Could have put the family on but would have been a small fortune.

To add to this, I did have the same insurance when I was an RCA. I believe it's only through the PO (only option) AND if I remember correctly, you have to do it when you're a new hire or at open enrollment. When I was hired they didn't have health insurance, so I had to get it at open enrollment when it was available at the end of the year. They can't charge you more than about 10% of your pay if you have to cover another person or a family but I did not elect to do that because it would have been insanely expensive... Like $800 a month or something. I'm not sure how the deficit would be paid but I bet they would keep a balance running if you didn't make enough for premiums.

The current plan was FORCED upon the USPS for all part time RCA's after passage of the ACA (affordable care act). Previously the RCA had to consistently work so many hours per week (think it was 30 or so) for an extended period to qualify to buy into a plan. The current political machinations and postal union intransigence may return us to -- none at all ?

My understanding is that RCAs only have the one insurance option. United Healthcare thing. Like all insurance stuff, it is confusing to me, but it is the main reason I took the job (as a retiree)-- just to have something in case of "the big one". It has a high deductible, but offers office visits with a co-pay, and seems to cover some other junk. I will say the dental coverage is nice. Two cleanings/visits a year for free.
Luckily we are basically healthy, and don't go to doctors much, knock wood.
