Holiday Day Off

What is the policy? Ha Ha their is no policy. You can be a junior carrier on a J route with Saturday off and they can give their Mon holiday pets the day off on the holiday. Then you can bid a route with Monday off and be forced in on your holiday on Saturday so they can give their Saturday n/s junior pets the day off. Then you can bid a j route with Saturday off and they can give their Monday holiday pets the day off then you can Ha Ha I pick 5

My day off is on Mondays.
I have yet to get my Saturday Holiday Day Off.
I am having a hard time understanding this.

Contractually, mgmt has the right to work the Holiday Peep prior to using the RDWL for that day. It is up to mgmt but I have heard of some Districts mandating their mgmt to use them.
The hierarchy for Saturdays with a Monday Holiday is All “available” subs, Monday Holiday peeps, Saturday RDWL peeps, Borrow if they want (new contract), then non-RDWL peeps. It is all in the Contract. Borrowing is the only thing that changed in the new Contract.

Thank you very simple now we have a policy.Senior 20 year N/S Monday Holiday carriers will work Saturday before junior 3 month Saturday carriers very very simple I believe that was the first posters question. If you are a junior carrier with a j route now you know ,oh by the way what can I reference at the step one.

Article 11.2.b talks about scheduling Holiday peeps. Then there’s a Step 4 from 8/23/05 that speaks to mgmt being allowed to use the Holidays before the RDWL. Mgmt does not HAVE to use the Holiday peeps if they don’t want to.

Oh what geez um oh uh" Mgmt does not Have to use Holiday peeps if they don't want to:?Sorry junior carriers are thought their was a policy but SURPRISE their is no policy.

Just curious but are they asking you to work the holiday or mandating?
Neither, they just say I have to work because that's what the contract says. I would just like to have a 3 days off, I feel like I've earned it. Management says it's because I chose to have Mondays off. If I had Saturday as my day off I would have my 3 days off.

I have a sub, they put him on another route. And we are not hurting for subs.

i have monday relief day, as well, and rarely get the "holiday saturday" off. straight pay for saturday, which you work every week. straight pay for the holiday, which you receive if you work or not. monday off as normal, and double mail on tuesday, just like everyone else. do you have a question about something? with a shortage of rca's, this is normal.
I would just like 3 days off for a Monday Holiday. I feel like I've earned it, since I've been a regular carrier. Never have had a 3 days off for a Holiday.

Having a Sub has nothing to do with it. The Sub belongs to the Post Office, not the Carrier. If your sub is needed elsewhere & mgmt can contractually work you, they will. The only violation that would be possible is if a Sub were available but not scheduled.

Some mgmt will allow a Holiday to be protected when Leave is requested prior to the “holiday“; i.e. request Friday for a 4-day weekend. Nothing in writing says mgmt can’t schedule the Holiday but most won’t if AL/SL is requested in conjunction.

So you have a sub and they’re not mandating you. You are entitled to the preceding day to observe the holiday. If it’s denied, you have a grievance. Next holiday that falls on a Monday, you say no to working the Saturday before.

If it makes you feel any better, I was off Saturday, and am taking off Tues. & Weds. just for good measure.... :giggle:

Yeah but I would say on holidays management knows the sub will have to be used for the carrier to observe the holiday.
Is there a stipulation contractually that says K days have precedence over holidays? ?
What do you mean by protecting a holiday?

K-days DO NOT have preference over Holidays. Article 11.2.b & Step 4 from 2005. Look up Holiday Scheduling in the NRLCA app under the SRG tab.

A Carrier cannot refuse to work their Holiday if mgmt needs them to work. The ONLY Grievance would be it a Sub were available to work but isn’t scheduled to work. Having a Sub doesn’t take precedence over a Carrier that doesn’t have an assigned sub to their route.

Good to know on the first half. Yes I understand that subs work for the office and not the carrier but this carrier said their office isn’t hurting for subs. It makes me think that management is just covering their butts by making sure they have the most people scheduled. The wording says the carrier is entitled to the Saturday before to observe the holiday. I think there’s an argument to show management isn’t attempting to give that carrier the holiday. They aren’t even mandating them.
The management in my office will schedule RCA “work” for days and have no route assigned. They are merely told to show up and they’ll have them do miscellaneous things in the office. They do this in case they have a carrier call in, they know they’ll have someone coming in and not have to worry about them not answering their phones. I had management deny leave for a carrier the day after a holiday when they had RCAs scheduled “work” and not on any routes. I had them grieve it and it was an easy win.
