Is it normal protocol for a supervisor to have a RCA turn in their badge if they experience heat exhaustion? (Update)

Today was only my second day and I had that happen. I haven't been through Rural Academy yet. I was too dizzy to drive and knew I would not be effective trying to process all the new information I was hearing for the first time. I asked him if that was proper protocol and he declined to answer the question. I am not even in the Union yet. I say supervisor. He might have been a Postmaster that was assigned to my branch for Amazon Sunday. That I am unclear of. He told me the regular Postmaster of my branch would call me. I have yet to hear from him.

Find your steward through this link.

Contact them as soon as you read this message. You may have to leave a voicemail. Call your steward each day and find out what the deal is.

Also, call your office. Ask about your next scheduled work day and location.

I don't see how they're utilizing an employee that has not yet been trained.

Thank you for your help. I will do that.

This post alone pisses me off. We will never retain rcas if this is going to be their first experience delivering. I know we all have "been through this". But Dang, when are we as a whole group going to finally say this has gone too far? Cmon people have a little compassion and patience, this is not an "easy" job as some of us like to say. Its overwhelming and confusing in the beginning and there are a whole lot of confusing in office politics that new employees don't have the advantage of knowing about. People always come first. Get over it and help your RCA's. Even the Brand new ones.
This was my second day. Let me tell you how my first day went. Before you read this keep in mind I had never used a USPS scanner in my life. At 3:30 on Friday afternoon I got a call from my Supervisor asking me if I could come into work at 7:30 am on Saturday. I said yes. The first thing she had me do was download a app called Route4You on my cell. I was entering the addresses of packages I was to deliver. At 10:30 she came up to me and said, "I have some bad news we you are needed at another office that is shorthanded." So I drove the 24 miles to this office. When I got there the supervisor asked me to do the same task, use the Route4you App to enter the addresses of a cage full of packages. I had some questions about the App and he had never used it before. So this supervisor was not trained to train me. There was a new girl, just 4 days on the job next to me that helped me. I had 58 packages. After I loaded up my car, I could not figure out how to get the GPS to work on the Route4You App. I also did not bring my charger to work. We were told in orientation to stay off our cell when delivering mail. I had no idea I was going to have to use my cell all day to deliver mail so I didn't bring my charger to work. When I got to my first stop I could not find the package in my car. I was not taught how to "case" the car. I called the super back and he said to unload the car and put the packages back in, in order of stops. It was over 95, I was in a Home Depot Parking lot unloading and reloading the car to get the packages in order. I had to Google the nearest Verizon because my cell was down to 26% and I needed to buy a charger. 45 minutes later It is so hot, I took off again. I was only able to deliver one package out of 58. It was a shit show. I had to take all the packages back. I was not properly trained. At 7:00 pm on Saturday I was asked by my Supervisor to work my second day on Amazon Sunday. And the net result of that was.. Turn in your Badge.

New hires have no union representation for 90 days.
Useless

They do have union representation.

However, during probation they can be fired with or without cause.
If he fired me I wonder why he didn't say your fired. Or you can't work here anymore. All he said was turn in your badge. He would not even answer the question if that was normal protocol. I also asked him how long he had been with the post office. He didn't answer that either. All he said was the Postmaster would call me. My regular supervisor also said my Postmaster would call me. I have not heard from him yet. They both told me that around 1:30 yesterday. Perhaps he will call before noon. Perhaps the call will be, your fired. For heat exhaustion. We shall see

Not exactly.

A employee in their probationary period has no access to the grievance procedure related to a "separation-disqualification".

A "removal" is different than a "separation-disqualification".

The separation must be initiated by the installation head. A supervisor cannot issue a separation-disqualification. They also have to give you a notice as to your last scheduled date if service.

Read ELM 365.2 to learn more about it.

Again, call your rep. Presume there is a misunderstanding.

We had a Union rep in orientation tell us, the first thing you need to do is join the Union. He left off the part about, we can't do shit for you during your first 90 days but pay us anyway.
This idea is not exactly accurate.

I’ve helped and seen new Rca’s get back/keep their job after being “fired” by appealing the the POOM/MPOO or the district manager. Immediate supervisors/postmasters CAN NOT fire Rca’s directly, but must go through their manager. You should NOT have been working anywhere before going through orientation and the rural academy, and your managers know that. They are worried that they will be caught having done something extremely WRONG, by sending you out to have an “accident” before being trained on the hazards of heat stroke, a problem the Usps has already allowed others to die from because they “Forgot” to train how to watch for heat stroke signs.
Go to your office today and ask for your badge back, and if they say no, ask to speak/appeal to their manager. Make it clear to them and others that you DID NOT RESIGN. They are attempting to say you never showed up again for work/training so they had to fill out a resignation form for you. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN. You can call your steward/district rep and get help in this, yes the union can’t represent you for any disciplinary action, but can for discrimination or pay issues. By the way even though you may have signed up for the union you pay NOTHING for it until after 90 days have passed.

Shmitty 2112 -- Welcome to the USPS! Or not!!

-- Are you sure your PM actually has your contact information?

-- I'd be proactive and go into your post office and see what your PM has to say.

-- Given the complete lack of any training anywhere, point that out to the PM if in fact you have been fired.

-- Did you turn in your badge? If so, has it been returned to your post office?

-- I'd suspect that the supervisor who asked you to turn in your badge is not in a position to fire you. Some have posted that District does the firing. Anyone??

-- Unfortunately, during your probationary period of 90 work days or 1 calendar year, you can be fired for any old reason manglement can come up with. Nevertheless, still contact the office steward, or if none in the office, your Assistant District Representative and provide details of your "experience".

-- Being required to use your own cell phone to down an APP for work is going above and beyond. The USPS is suppose to provide all necessary equipment. That's in the PO-603.

-- If actually fired, you need to do a few things:

- document your experience in a very detailed letter, naming names, dates, locations and the heat-related difficulties.

- Send the letters to:

Postmaster General DeJoy
United States Postal Service
475 L'Enfant Plaza SW
Washington, DC 20260-0010

and

President Ronnie Stutts
NRLCA
1630 Duke Street
Alexandria, VA 22314-3467

-- If thoroughly disgusted with your postal experience, contact the local media! They love a human interest story.

-- Good luck.

This isn't entirely accurate.

The union can represent all rural carriers in any and all disciplinary actions.

A "separation-disqualification" however, is a non-disciplinary separation. This makes it a contractual grievance, not a disciplinary grievance.

Our new scanners have (actually) decent mapping software. Isn't there a way to build a dynamic list from scratch (select scans) which can then utilize the gps function? If not, why not? Why are we recommending 3rd party mapping services? How much did we spend on new scanners?

No thanks. Our union blows and I won’t waste any more time on reading up on what they should know and should readily be giving us. Ya know, the whole representation thing🤔

Management can NOT require you to use your cell phone to facilitate postal operations.

You were treated abysmally, and I also believe they are setting you up to be terminated to cover their own unprofessional backsides.
(I wouldn't put these managers in charge of anything. Their incompetence could have resulted in your death. )

You deserve better, much better.

I just got a text msg from my supervisor asking me if I was in Rural Carrier Academy at this moment. I told her that it does not start until Wednesday August 4th. I did not ask her if I still had a job. Would she even know? I don't know if I have been fired. Perhaps I have not. I just no longer have my badge. The fact that she sent me that text this am tells me that there is a lack of communication between her and our Postmaster and the people that run the Rural Academy reguarding newly hired employees.
