Is there a time limit to answer management for a call in?

It took me 4 hours to get back to my PO about working tomorrow for a sub holding down their primary who is on fmla. When I said yes he got back to me over a half hour later and said he already got a yes from a more senior sub, but she's not in the matrix for this route and I told him as much and that I would be there in the morning. He said sure, we can discuss this tomorrow... what is there to discuss? Is there a time limit that I dont know about?

Sounds like he attempted to use the matrix, and you where not available to accept your chance to work, so he went on to the next name on the list until he was able to fill the vacancy! I wouldn't push the issue, its a battle not worth fighting!
If this vacancy needed filling the same day I would understand that as an issue, but that was not the case.

Do you think that was all he had to do for the day? If you have ever been in management you would understand. You don't leave issues hanging, if you have a chance to cross one off the list you jump at it. Call it done and move on to the next one. Its any leaders responsibility to accomplish the mission, if you make attempts to follow the guidelines and rules along the way and someone's feelings get hurt, so be it. The attempt was made to follow the matrix and the first carrier that responded that they would work that shift solved the problem, the issue was satisfied!

In a 4 route office, I think he had more than a minute. Do you think maybe the frustration with getting a chastising about taking too long to reply was stemmed from the initial sub having made this last minute request for oh... literally the 18th time in 5 weeks? But you're right, I followed the rules and the guidelines while also enjoying my day off until the ripe hour of 5pm and did my due diligence, so what if his feelings and yours were hurt. Far from the answer or even guidance to my question, you must be in management as well.

When was the vacancy that needed to be filled, was it the next morning? It sounds as if you didn't call him back until after 5pm. So that means his original call to you was about 1pm. What's to say that at 4pm he was tried of waiting for a response from you and wanted to put the issue to bed. So he decided to call someone else and got an immediate yes from his second choice. His responsibility is to insure complete coverage for all operational tasks within his four walls.

No I 'm not in management now but in a previous life, before USPS I spent 25 + years dealing with situations like this with a staff of up to 45 individuals!

So the following morning, how did the discussion go?

You must remember as long as your rights were not violated it not all about you!
