Texas 2 District

District Representative:

Assistant District Representatives:
Rick Bell PO Box 842446 Houston TX 77284 C: 832-588-0206

Call the district steward in the area and ask if there are any offices that can't hire and are ready to hire off the street to fill regular positions. If there are some of those, you can "Transfer" into those positions, without trading. Trading in the rural craft is very rare.
Would it be just starting as a new carrier or would they keep their current pay step and (non-office) seniority?

I called and all is false. If I did so call swap i probably wouldn't get that route especially if some regular wanted tht route. The guy said the worst route in that p.o is the one I probably end up with

@All Saints Day did a great job at explaining contractually how mutual transfers work.

It is true that when you do a mutual exchange you will be awarded the route in the office that no one bid on. The carrier that is doing the exchange with you will have their route go up for bid so you will be awarded whatever route is left over if any of the carriers in that office decide to bid.

In my experience the "worst route in the office" can mean different things to different people. Sometimes the worst route is a small H route that no one wants because they don't want to work 6 days. Sometimes the worst route is a 48K that takes 10 hours to deliver. Sometimes the worst route is the only route in the office that doesn't have an LLV. That's why it's important to ask questions about ALL the routes in the office. Ask how many K, J and H routes there are. Do they all have vehicles?, etc.

If you really want or need to move to an area I think it's worth it to accept the fact you might not wind up with the best route. The 2 things I would consider a deal breaker are: no vehicle or a substandard route that's in danger of being converted to an aux and the regular excessed. Other than that I wouldn't mind working a tough route for a while until another route within the office comes up for bid. But that's just me personally.

As far as being given a route that is vacant because they aren't able to hire anyone. I honestly have never heard of that happening without the carrier having to resign and apply as a new hire (meaning you would lose your place on the step table and start from the beginning at step 1/table 2). If that has changed in any way the best person to reach would be someone in HR Shared Services (HRSSC).
