New AUX carrier about option

if you take the 6 days, will you ever be able to find a sub? i went 5/1 because i had a 70 year old sub that would quit if he didnt get one day a week.
I don’t recall an Des. 79 Aux RCA being allowed to request a sub. I’m thinking no, but could be wrong.

I'm new auxiliary carrier just started. I took 5/1 option but I heard I could change to 6 days option if I want to. Is it true? If so, how am I gonna do? I asked PM but she said she needs to ask somebody in upper level, LOL. I wonder somebody here know.

Contract language reads:
. An employee serving the auxiliary route and serving on the assigned regular route as the primary leave replacement may subsequently elect to serve the auxiliary route six days, if mutually agreeable between the carrier and the installation head. Upon this election, Article 30.2.G.1.b. will apply.

It's been a while. IIRC, Wilson did a pre-arbitration or some type of agreement allowing aux route relief carriers for the RCA if finding coverage was a problem.

Still looking.

I had a sub for over 5 years on an auxy rt.... funny thing was... when I made Reg, they asked the Auxy sub if they wanted to move to a sub vacancy on a Reg rt... and the Rca said NO, I'd rather just sub on the Auxy... turns out they made them move to the sub vacancy on the Reg Rt anyways, as they wouldn't allow the Auxy to have a sub when a Reg Rt was short... so I kidded with the sub, this is exactly what the USPS does... ask what you wanna do, then make you do something else.... ?

Do you think they'll be able to hang everyday on a regular route.... it wears on you... just sayin'... speaking from experience here... I wouldn't want to be doing this everyday at 70...
from experience. I'm @ 70 went regular @ 67. Didn't want to, but wasn't into working 7 days/wk as an rca. Life circumstances dictate what needs to be done. In my case, not that it matters, have to help support 3 households. Do I love it? No! But you do what you have to. Don't dump on the older carrier because you want the route. You don't know his/her life circumstances! Respect traveling mailman!

gotstamps et al -- "I don’t recall an Des. 79 Aux RCA being allowed to request a sub. I’m thinking no, but could be wrong."

-- Here is a bit of a stretch ( actually a large stretch ) contained in Section 822.3 of the M-38. In part:

Auxiliary routes are operated in the same manner as a regular route except auxiliary route carriers are compensated for the hours actually worked.

-- Article 30.2.A.2. In part: Regular rural carriers shall have the right to require that a leave replacement be assigned to their route.

-- So since AUX routes operate in the same manner as regular routes and regular routes ( evan an "H" route ) can have a sub, shouldn't AUX routes have subs?

Still stretching! Article 7.2. Substitute Rural Carriers, Rural Carrier Assistants, and Rural Carrier Reliefs.

- The following employees provide service on established regular and AUXILIARY ROUTES in the absence of regular or auxiliary rural carriers. This service may be as a leave replacement and / or covering vacant regular routes pending the selection of regular rural carrier, as an auxiliary assistant, or as an auxiliary route carrier. ( goes on to list the different Designation Codes. )

Deer smearer et al -- "A-120 or A-121 backup to the auxiliary??? "

-- Good memory!

-- A-120 ( 19 OCT 1990 ) -- in part: However, when circumstances in an office are such that there is frequently and/or continually no relief carrier available to serve as a backup on an Auxiliary route, then the postmaster MUST be allowed to hire another relief carrier to OFFICIALLY serve as the BACKUP on the auxiliary route.

Once such an individual is hire by the Postal Service to be the backup on an auxiliary route, that person is entitled to be the backup on an auxiliary route when the assigned auxiliary carrier is not available -- that means six days a week, not just on Saturdays.

-- A-121 ( 09 OCT 1991 ) -- in part: The hiring and assignment of leave replacements as back-ups to auxiliary routes IS DISCOURAGED. However, in instances such as this one, when the leave replacements assigned to an auxiliary route is unavailable, the leave replacement HIRED, specifically as the back-up for that auxiliary route, WILL BE utilized.

-- Even if the USPS will abide by the Step 4-s, will there be any one willing to be hired to serve to fill the position?

The piss me off reason I remembered those is they were less than a year apart and the second one basically reiterates the first.

Should have been a punitive damage non-compliance not another settlement.

this 70 year old has two jobs as of now. doesnt need them, doesnt want to slow down. but if they dont push him too hard, its only a 5 hour a day route. he will be fine for a year or so i think. Im just saying, if the aux route has a sub assigned to it, im pretty sure the sub will quit if they only get 1 or 2 days a month to work. So then you have to pull a sub of another route, which leaves you at the mercy of when the other reg wants off.

As I said earlier, I was on an Auxy Rt for over 5 years and had a sub the whole time... I worked 5/1 while subbing a K Route.... so my sub got to work the Auxy at least a day a week and sometimes more.... they also worked on some Reg Rt's every now and then.... they had another job, so the RCA gig was mostly a placeholder for them, and they weren't worried about working a lot at the PO... so it worked okay for them....

I saw a carrier hang on a K Route until they were in their late 60's... in that case, the carrier got pretty slow... I suppose it varies greatly by individual tho... maybe there are some 70 year olds that can kick @$$ and take names... for me, I'm just sayin' I hope I will not be delivering mail when I'm 70... but, to each their own.... some may be doing it at 80, and if they're happy, then I'm happy for them... (y)

Its been my experience as a sub, on duty 5 days a week for Reg out for 3 months with illness, it is way way easier to work on the same customary route 5 days a week than bounce back and forth to routes! Period, yes we can hang 5 days a week when we know where we will be, and more familiar with our customers, and able to remember every box, every bump that is gonna shoot our front end into the mailbox and every customer whose lid closes easily or one you have to slam or which house has small children or which elder may want to talk or which customer calls in if their package is not in the box or which customer wants their package in the car or which one does NOT want their package in a car or which one has recently divorced and does not want the wife to get the check or which one is off at work for 2 weeks, or which one has a camera or which one's food you can eat if given to you and which one you cannot, or which one you worry about if they have not picked up mail for 3 days or which one knows where you live......…….yes WE CAN HANDLE 5 DAYS A WEEK,...………...BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen folks, there is 20 year olds that cannot do this job and 70 years old that can do it easily...……….all peeps mentally and physically are NOT the same age wise.........….make no assumptions about age...……….
