I never count the first year because we can’t bid unless it’s a PTF position but 2 1/2 wasn’t too bad. 3 1/2 if you want to count the first year.
I think I read somewhere that 5 or 6 years was the "average" time as a RCA.... Obviously there are MANY above and below the average.... I just thought it might be interesting to see what those on this forum have experienced...

We've all been, or are now RCAs... and know it can be a long hard row to hoe.... probably they slowest path to a career position in the USPS.... so tip of the hat to you all... (y)

When I was hired they were saying 3 to 5 years, well it took me 8 plus years.

@Boxholder 's thread got me "fondly" thinking of my years as a RCA.... and that's motivated me to post this poll.... so, let's play.... how many years have you been (or were) a RCA.... was about 12 for me.... :(
9 years. Always worried I wouldn't make rent. Turns out, I worked 5- 6 days almost every week + clerked part time. A lot of other days I worked 2 routes a day + clerked. Also drove an hour to many other offices to do routes when I only had 3days a week. Subs should get paid mileage when traveling to other offices.

This makes our apprenticeship of 15 years absurd. 12 years RCA, 15 years apprentice.

Just think, if you were a pkg handler for UPS. About 4 years you may get a package car driver position. 4 more years you're making $35/hr. While we dream of $26/hr after 15 years. And doing the same job, but with added mail and pov.

Does my first 15 months as a TRC count in that? Seven years subbing, then four years on an aux route before going regular. I'd really love to be able to buy back some of that time.

When we were short on clerks, they used to let me sort parcels and flats, then box the PO flats after the carriers left. That's a big no-no now, but I soaked up every hour I could get back then.

Yes, I started as a TRC too.... did it for a year then got a RCA position at a nearby office.... I count it along with my RCA time, as none of it counts for much of anything now....

I worked as a casual in a nearby office for 2 years before getting the aux route. I learned a lot there and it helped pay the bills too.

When i started they said likely 10 years, I wasn't interested at my age anyway....did it for the $$$ and the $$$ only. Have a full time gig working for a contractor.

Still do, can go regular 10/23 when 25 year RC retires.

I'm not interested, never really was. At this stage it would be a cut in pay and I doubt I would ever have a day off.
