Question about ARCs volunteering

Started ARC. Got a couple Sundays in so far. Also volunteered to help during the week and ran part of a route one day. Since I was a holiday clerk I also volunteered to help out with clerk stuff during the week. Now as I read the contract it’s strictly volunteer. Mrs. LBPD16 was also a former carrier and is an ARC also who volunteers. Lead clerk actually put us on clerk schedule and I’m ok with that for now. Mrs. Lbpd16 was on clerk schedule today but had a migraine so I went in her place, was not scheduled. PM asked where she was and I told her she was sick. PM then says she should have called in sick via the 1-800 number. I didn’t say anything as I was about to leave for the day. I just find it a bit strange that my wife should have called in sick for a job that really should not be scheduled and is strictly volunteer. All our work is on green cards and we do not clock in to either carrier or clerk scanner. What would be the reason for calling in sick? We could just have been no shows and there isn’t anything management could do since it’s volunteer help. Am I missing something here???

lbpd16 -- As Mrs LBPD16 was actually scheduled, I suppose it could be considered a courtesy to call in that she would not be available.

-- The PM didn't notice the Mrs was not there, but you were, but not until you were leaving for the day?

-- Sounds like you both have a good deal going with all the volunteering, especially you getting extra work on the clerk side. Best to stay on the good side of the PM.

My thought was I’m not scheduled and she’s sick so I just go in in her place. Problem solved. The actual problem is that the office is still short staffed on clerk and rural side. Yesterday 2 rurals were sick so the super and pm both had to run a route. PM said if Mrs came in then I could have come in to run part or all of a route. I think that is the real reason she mentioned Mrs not coming in.

Yes. PM was busy and I was hiding in the box section. PM didn’t really notice till I was about to leave.

I’m hoping to get enough hours but not too much. Meaning 6 to 8 hours a day would be enough and 10 to 12 too much. I was counting on Amazon Sunday being a solid 8 to 10 hours but so far it’s been very light, like 2 to 5 hours.

If I don’t get enough hours I may have to go to the clerk side. Really don’t want to but would be way better than carrier again. Unfortunately clerks are micromanaged just as much or more than city carriers. All this talk about not throwing parcels and finishing box section fast enough. At the same time the Dutch door rings constantly for package pickups and there is at least one morning package drop off and one or 2 in the afternoon. And all those times can be adjusted by the PM. I think they get their bonuses off our backs if we do things faster. Maybe I’m wrong 🤷‍♂️

Still even as a volunteer subject to needing to call in to report being sick etc. management can do whatever they like just a matter of them following policy when it comes to such instances. Wouldnt worry about it much personally.

Just out of curiosity, when you work the mail on other routes and don’t clock in, how do you do the start load, end load and return to delivery unit on your scanner?
I’ve been finding in many uses of Arcs, the management is leaving the scanning off. Those routes are losing 5-8 hours of evaluation per week because of this.

I actually used another person’s id card to clock in so that route got credit. Manglement has not given me instructions on what I should do other than using another id card.

Yes. Not worried about it. We just want to help because we know how the carriers we worked with as regulars feel. They are all happy we are helping them. But if manglement tries to mess with us we will no longer help and just show up on Sundays. It’s really up to management and how they treat us. We will respond accordingly.
