Snailmail2000 - I still don't understand your desire to take the discussion of RCA issues elsewhere. If you don't want to read something that is posted, skip over that person's comment and make your next post back on topic.

For example, on the topic of RCA issues:

I've been an RCA for six years now. While covering for an injured regular, after 90 days I started earning sick/annual leave. As soon as the route went up for bid and was filled, I was no longer in leave earning status. My annual leave was paid out immediately. However, I have 5.5 days of sick leave that are unusable until I enter leave earning status again. I can't use those days at all. If I never take a full time position or enter leave earning status again, those 5.5 days disappear. While I am thankful that there's a provision in the contract for RCAs to earn annual/sick days, it's such a limited opportunity that it's nearly worthless. Will the union fight for more generous leave earning for RCAs? NO. If 7,000 RCAs come forward at convention and propose something similar to what the CCAs have now, will our union fight for us? NO, they have a party to plan.

We - RCAs and regular carriers have a contract that states the industrial study for revised compensation was supposed to be in place back in 2015. I haven't heard a peep out of our union in regards to the study. Many of the carriers in my office don't even know there's a study going on. Is our union going to fight for back pay once the study is in place (if it ever is) like the city carrier's union fought for back pay when their last contract was signed...........I'm having a hard time typing now because I'm laughing so hard at the mere thought of our union doing so....

Is the union doing anything at all with regards to the RCA in our office that wasn't required to work a single Sunday in Nov-Dec while the rest of us were required to be available? NO. Is the union doing anything to try and get premium pay for Sunday/holiday/after 6pm work like the other crafts? NO.

After six years on this job, I'm still looking at probably a minimum of 2 more years before I have the opportunity to get a full time route. Do I think it's fair that I have no access to TSP? NO. Do I think it's right that I have such a limited way to earn annual/sick leave? NO.

Do I think that if every single RCA that works for the post office bands together to try and persuade the union to get us RCAs a few measly scraps in the contract it will change anything? I bet you can guess the answer to that one.

Even IF (and that's a HUGE IF) the union tried to get us RCAs something, they would give it up at negotiations or lose it in arbitration come contract time.

LSS, I really wanted to like this post. You made a lot of good points about the problems RCAs face. Unfortunately, I cannot agree that we should just resign ourselves to "measly scraps" and let the USPS and the Union walk all over us. I've paid my dues from the first paycheck and I deserve representation. Passionate, intelligent, knowledgeable RCAs like you could be an asset in that.

How will you feel when you're still an RCA in 6 years? In 10? How about when routes start getting consolidated and carriers are being excessed because parcel delivery goes private, or is done by drones? Will you still be glad you didn't think it was worth our time to discuss amongst ourselves ways to mobilize our numbers and ask for what we deserve now?

"Non-Career" employees are the throw-aways of the USPS. They use us up and spit us out. And the carrot they are dangling at the end of it all is getting smaller every day. Especially in the Rural craft.

We are not "Pre-regulars." Most of us will NEVER become regular. That is the hard truth we need to face. And that is the reason we need to be working together now, instead of merely waiting for the day when the chips fall in our favor.

I'll tell you how I feel.... Tired every single day and every part of my body aches.

I started in 2004 and although I am still not a regular I keep telling myself perhaps soon, because I am next in line!

SmailMail - Thank you for your post. I think where we differ greatly is that you still have faith in our union that something can and will change for RCAs. Yes, I am a union member. Will I be a union member much longer? Most likely, no.

I grew up in a union household. My dad was UAW. I married a Steelworker who is now IBEW due to a career change. I know what a strong union is, and the NRLCA is not a strong union. It's a joke. The NRLCA is more concerned with planning parties than improving the working conditions/benefit packages of the carriers that they are supposed to represent.

Case in point: When there's a contract violation our union tells us to follow the direct order and file a grievance later. Even if I'm standing at the manager's desk with a contract copy in hand proving my point, the union will tell me to follow orders then file. And if I don't include a 'cease and desist' in my grievance, I will have to file again the next time that particular item is violated. The carrier in the next office over may have the exact same issue come up a day later, and that carrier will be told to follow then file. There's no power in our union.

If there's a contract violation on my husband's job, he doesn't even have to have the direct contract citation available. He can say to his foreman, 'No, that violates the contract.' There's no do it and file later. The contract has power. And if the same issue comes up on another job site in a few days, the company faces monetary penalties for the repeated contract violation. If he needs a union rep, they are just a phone call away. None of this leaving a message and waiting days or weeks for a reply. And yes, his union rep is working on a job site as well.

I've heard before that the NRLCA has no power because we aren't allowed to strike. Well, my husband is in a non-striking union, and they still have plenty of power.

How will you feel when you’re still an RCA in 6 years? In 10?

Actually, that may be the route that I choose to go because our awesome union screwed over a bunch of us RCAs that are at the higher-level pay as RCAs but we'll hit Table 2 when we become regular carriers. So I stand to lose about $4 an hour if I choose to take a route.

So that it doesn't seem like all I do is complain - I love my job. There aren't many other jobs where you can have a couple hours in the office around other people and then spend the rest of your day alone, in the country seeing all of the amazing things we get to see. There also aren't many other jobs out there where I could make as much hourly without a degree or specialized training.

I don't care if I get the direct order to take DPS to the street....I say no, you may as well start the paper work. Is the world going to end if I defy a direct order? No.

I no longer tremble when directed to do something against the contract.....who the hell cares anymore? The union is only around....oh, wait...they aren't around at all.............

the USPS only cares about 'making the numbers'.

the NRLCA only cares about making its "money".

The only thing I do care about is doing the job I was hired to do. And doing it to the best of my ability. And with pride. Not because of the way the Union treats me, not because of the way management treats me...but because of the way I treat me. My customers pay my salary...one stamp at a time.

I threw in the 'union' towel long ago. Going to district meetings and having my concerns and questions ignored consistently told me every thing I needed to know. They gave me no rights, why should I fight for something that is unobtainable?

USPS is full of people looking for the next pay step increase.....they don't care how they get it.

No one cares about anything but money anymore. And how to get more of it. How many carriers are going to lie and cheat in this upcoming count? Using the excuse "i'm gonna screw them before they screw me." Is it wrong? to me it is...but you gotta live with you after getting that extra $.25 an hour. Just don't expect me to lie and cheat for you.

But, it is, as sew&sew said, a great job, for those of us that are like minded. Us, that enjoy the drive and nature and seeing the natural world all around as the seasons come and go. Us, that enjoy talking to old Mr. Smith when he is standing at his mailbox waiting for his daily dose of human contact. We, that smile when that golden retriever runs with joyous enthusiasm to greet us. And to think someone is paying us to do all this while putting pieces of paper into metal boxes. Who'd a thunk it?

I think RCAs have plenty of room for improving their standing in the USPS... I think comparing and contrasting what PSEs, CCAs and such get as opposed to what RCAs get would be a good place to start... if the other craft's "transitional employees" get certain benefits, then why not the RCAs??? It may not be everything, but it'd be a start... and every journey starts with a single step...

I think most Regulars would be in favor of seeing RCA benefits improved, if for no other reason it might help in hiring and retaining peeps, hence more ease in getting a day off... not to mention if credit is given for RCA service, that would help the Regs as we all have RCA time ourselves... our craft is stronger if we are united...

Jmho...

I always hope one of the fiery ranter ravers that get on here raising some hail might be the next Vinnie Sombrotto... so far no luck tho...

Yeah, we got people on here talking about trying to bail some water... LOL... I think you're right P.O.T... sit back and let the band play on, as we ride this good ole ship USPS to the bottom... it's a slippery slope, and we're already well down it...

It's the millennial brain training they have been fed growing up that the new young RCA'S have. Sorry to say all things can't be equal for all in life and in business. Somebody will always make more or less than you, have better or worse working conditions. If everything was the same it would be communism, even that has proven few are way better off than the masses.

We actually aren't that different there... I have no faith in our Union...but.... I have faith in us. (corny, I know)

I have seen the power of a mobilized minority to make big changes in an apathetic system when they put their minds to it. I've been part of it! And I honestly believe that a vocal, active, cohesive group of RCAs with a well-defined message could make a difference. So far we've all been separately screaming into the void...even if we're all saying similar things, it's easy to brush us off as individuals.

Maybe we should decide on a message, work together on recruiting like-minded people, and all scream together? The worst it can do is fail... and if that happens we regroup and plan a new way forward.

An RCA Caucus is where I'd start.

None of us would be here if we didn't love our jobs. We wouldn't be wasting our time arguing about it on the internet if we didn't all care. And that's why we put up with all the things LSS wrote about in post #31...

But...the writing's on the wall and the regular position of the future won't be the regular position of the past, or even of today. And the vultures would love nothing more than for us to give up, sit back, and let them pick us apart until nothing is left, so that they can cut us loose without so much as a retirement plan or a sick day, or a functional body...

THIS is what they want from us. To work our asses off for decades, no benefits....striving for the carrot.... that keeps getting smaller....and farther away... and less "tasty." Until there's no carrots left.

We can all get together and tell them to stick that system where the sun don't shine. We might fail. But at least we didn't just roll over and let ourselves get screwed.

[Clutch my pearls!]

Champagne doesn't really pair well with BBQ Steak. Try some Gaja Barbaresco 2007.

Guess you can afford steak and carrots, but you can't buy good-taste! :P
