Standard height for mailboxes

Yes I agree, the binding part is this:  " Because of varying road and curb conditions and other factors, the
Postal Service recommends that customers contact the postmaster or carrier
before erecting or replacing their mailboxes and supports", and yes, that is common sense.

Looking at the Postal Operations Manual 632.523 - 632.525 it mentions mailbox height using the jargon "Generally" mailboxes should be 41 to 45. This generally is about as open to interpretation as the aforementioned "guidelines" post above. Im a regular rural carrier who drives an LLV, and have had such a headache getting 500 or so customers on my 832 customer route to move em up to 47-50 inches. One customer was so nasty he had print outs from the USPS website, threatened to go to the law. My County highway dept., the USPS website, the municipal town website all mention one thing in Common: consult your local postmaster. My postmaster wants all my boxes 47-50" for LLV routes not only because it's better for snow, less dropping mail, general ergonomics, but also safety. Imagine getting rear ended as half your torso is out of the vehicle. Common sense.
