Sunday Work.

Though I am not the rep, he was out for a couple weeks vacation, some of the RCA's approached me regarding being made to work every Sunday.I asked them if they had signed the Volunteer list or the DID NOT Volunteer list. none had any idea what I was talking about. I approached the supervisor and asked him if they had posted the volunteer list. He replied no, they were told when they were hired that they had to work Sundays so there's no need for a list.I did try to explain that anything that was told to them during their interview gets immediately wiped out once hired and covered under a contract. Most understand that even if we do end up getting the "list" most everyone will be forced to work every Sunday anyway. One of those RCA's went to the PM with the information I provided and was told that NO, I told you when you were hired that you would be working Sundays.I just handed this pile of crap to the Steward as he returned from vaca.

chwpakabra -- Should have take Step 4 ( S-106 / 8-pages )) aka the MOU regarding Sunday and Holiday Parcel Delivery Work List.

-- In short, the NRLCA District Rep or designee AND a postal Service rep designated by the District Manager Human Resources, WILL create a listing of ALL available part-time flexible rural carriers, substitute rural carriers, RCA's, and rural carrier relief employees assigned to the hub location, including station, branches, and any remotely managed post office(s), associated 'spoke' offices; and nearby rural delivery post offices, as determined by the parties' representatives.

Each employee on the list will indicate his/her desire to work or not work on Sundays and holidays, accordingly. Once signed, the list will be alphabetized, by last name regardless of seniority, classification or the assigned office.

-- Could it be no such list was ever created?

-- Newly hired RCA's will be "afforded" the opportunity to place their name on the Sunday/Holiday Parcel Delivery List as volunteers within sixty ( 60 ) days of hire. Or placed on the non-volunteer list if not wanting the Sunday work.

-- Should be an easy win for the steward IF the RCA's will grieve the situation.

A lot of offices don't want to deal with these rules when it comes to Sundays.
My district doesn't inform mgmt of this "list" to be posted for sign-up when the RDWL list is offered. It's even harder when there are Spokes & a Hub whereas the Hub wants the Spokes to just send over whoever and the Spokes don't want to be told what to do.
Most peeps don't understand the "Alphabetical" part but it's more for ease when combining multiple offices as trying to combine "by seniority" would be a nightmare.

in our office about 7 RCA's involved When I was an RCA a couple years ago there was one time I remember them asking if I wanted to be on the volunteer list. I just made reg. in January, and worked a total of 4 Sundays voluntarily, i was always told that i was "grandfathered in " as i was hired before Sunday work started. I was involved in my previous union, and have only recently become involved in actually reading the contract and such with this one.Reading that letter it appears that our HUB consists of us plus a few other towns and that ALL towns should be involved on ONE list for Sundays, not each individual office. Currently our office sends all but 2 RCA's ( aux hold downs) and the other offices send none or one each. From what i heard last night the PM said she would "work with" the RCA's from our office to allow them to take some sundays off (2 have their kids every other weekend) and that was the big issue for them. so i am guessing that the steward will not be pushing grievances. He is still sitting on 2 of mine from the first month i was a regular from February. He actually wants me to apply to be one but i refuse to write a resume and write an essay about my qualifications and why i want to be steward.

You don't have to write anything, just run and get voted in by members in your office. Any body that is a member of the NRLCA can be a steward. It does say "Member in good standing". I think good standing means you are paying dues, and I have never seen anyone "rejected" that was willing to be a steward.

i'm in a relatively small town about 175 miles from the nearest amazon warehouse. i never thought we'd have sunday amazon, but starting july 8th, it's here. apo and rmpo together have 7k's , 1 h , 1 aux. with a total of 5 rca's, but 1 running aux 5/1.
with the start of sunday work, it sounds right now, 2 of the rca's are resigning.
my question is how in the hell are any new rca's going to be hired? they all ready would run for the door as soon as they found out they would be expected to work saturday.

I'm an RCA and we have 8 in our office. As long as they have enough willing to work sundays can they make me work too. we currently have 3 scheduled and one on standby each week. I don't want to work any sundays shouldn't I be able to be on a do not want to work list and only be made to if there isn't enough others willing to work

How long before they start forcing Regular Carriers to work 7 Days a week too? If they can't or won't hire RCA's, who will deliver those Sunday Amazon Packages? Management? Yeah when Pigs Fly!!

from article 8 of the contract

Section 1. Work Week
The basic work week for regular rural carrier employees shall
be six (6) days, except as relief days are provided for certain
carriers and for carriers serving triweekly routes. Regular rural
carriers may not work on Sunday

I know the contract (what good is that) says we may not work Sunday, but even as they implemented Amazon Sunday the contract said (paraphrase) every reasonable effort will be made to avoid scheduling RCA's on Sundays.
Also exceptions by way of MOU allowed Regulars to Volunteer for Sunday work over the Last 2 Christmas Seasons. It's a short step from Volunteer to Voluntold, and who is gonna stop them?

Posted by: RCA 74
WHAT CONTRACT ? We don't have no stinking contract!
As much as I understand this frustration on the contract being in negotiations, we are still under the previous contract and talks as if we have no contract are a blatantly false assumption of ignorance. There are clear rules made through the MOU. You as a steward or carrier can either choose to hold management accountable or not. Its thats simple. So many of our problems could be solved simply by people standing up for themselves. My office has had amazon Sunday since November of last year. Since then we didn’t follow the rules because the RCAs were content with the ways it was being done. Then it got complicated because we became a hub office with two amazon Sunday offices being ran out of ours. Then come to find out with that other office there were 4 other spoke offices that are required to have thier subs on the work list.A month back the RCAs has had enough and I moved to kill the practice of wrong actions. It has been a long battle but when you do the right thing and follow the rules things pay off. After the past 10 months of a free for all on Sundays we will finally be doing it the right way. Giving subs the chance to work as well as rotate off so they are not worked into the ground. All it takes is the motivation to do the right thing and the right mind people to effect change.
