Time off

So I'm gonna be out for a new baby and my sub wants the same time off. Obviously I'm going to be off,but do I need to sign their 3971 even though I'm not going to work for them? Don't know if management is trying to ploy me into "you signed it,now you're workin" . It was my understanding you only sign if you are volunteering,
saying yes I'll work for my sub.

j. Without recourse to Article 8.5, the Employer may allow a regular rural carrier to work on his or her relief day in order to grant the leave replacement scheduled to serve the regular’s route, the day off, provided:
(1) The leave replacement has submitted a writ- ten request to be non-scheduled or to have leave on the regular’s relief day;
(2) The regular rural carrier has signed the request, thereby indicating agreement; and
(3) The regular rural carrier and the Employer have agreed that compensation for work- ing the relief day will only be an X day to be immediately scheduled by mutual agreement.
The scheduled X day must be within the next twelve (12) weeks. PS Form 3971 will be com- pleted for the mutually agreed X day and the scheduled X day will be given the same consid- eration as approved annual leave. A part-time flexible rural carrier is not entitled to the route’s evaluated hours for any day the Employer has granted his or her request to be non-scheduled.

Do not sign. Even though you say obviously you’re going to be off by you signing that you are stating that you will work for the relief. We are not required to sign anything management puts in our face. Hopefully you have filed FMLA papers and filled out your leave slips for the period of time you will be off for maternity

-- Manglement not using the correct scenario.

-- If need be, get a doctor's note indicating you would not be able to work due to the birth of the baby.

-- Consider getting FMLA paperwork filled out?

- When you can take leave under FMLA = childbirth and newborn care.

-- Seems manglement has sufficient time to go "hunting" for someone to cover the route while both you and the sub will be off.

-- PS - nice avatar!
