ttranfer Question

I have been an RCA for 1.5 years. I am older than all but one of the regulars in my office. A town not far from me has 4 routes, and only 1 sub. 2 of there regular carriers are over 65, one is over 70. We have discussed a transfer, but my question is: Do I have to wait another year in that office to be able to take one of the jobs if they retire? I have looked around and cannot find an answer. Thanks

grvljammer -- Check page 48 of the new contract:

-- A substitute, rural carrier associate, or rural carrier relief employee, who has completed the probationary period ( 90-work days or 1 year, which ever occurs first ) and then submits a written request for reassignment, may be reassigned from one office to another, provided a vacancy exists in the leave replacement ranks in the office to which reassignment is requested.

-- Step 4 ( P-115 ): RCA's who have completed their probationary period may request a transfer in accordance with Article 30.2.F. If the gaining office accepts the employee's request for transfer, the losing office must release the RCA. The transfer will be effective within 30 days of the notification to the losing office.

-- Sounds like you better start drafting your request for transfer! But don't forget to do your due diligence about the office you want to transfer to: How does manglement treat its RCA's? How is the PM - a reasonable person or a tyrant? Etc. etc.

-- Although your transfer request goes to the PM of the office you want to transfer to, be sure to left your current PM know of your intentions so he / she can check the hiring list to get a jump on replacing you.

-- Good luck. And remember, the only place the grass is always greener is over the septic tank. ( although it certainly sounds like a good office to transfer into )

Yes, you will be eligible to bid on routes at the new office as soon as you are officially assigned there. Just keep in mind your seniority starts again at the new office, so the RCA already there will be senior to you.

Here's a clip from the contract:

Article 12.3.B.

B. Local Posting and Bidding of Regular Rural Routes
1. Post the vacancy at the vacancy post office, including
stations and branches, for all regular rural carriers,
substitute rural carriers, and rural carrier associates
(RCAs) with one (1) year of continuous service as an
RCA. The notice shall be posted for ten (10) calendar
days.

Yes you will be able to bid and no you don't have to wait a year to do it. I did it, left my office of 3 years as senior sub and went to an office as junior sub and made regular less than 6 months later since no other RCAs wanted to go full time.

Thanks for the replys!! I will have to think it over, see the best option. Kind of a no brainer as far as making regular, but I live on the route I deliver on now, and know alot of the people, since they are my neighbors.
