Which would RCA prefer in a contract?

Hypothetical situation: If Union asked RCAs, you can only get 1. Which is your choice?

  • Solid Pay Raise (I'm talking like minimum $1 to $1.50 an hour)

Answer the following hypothetical situation:

I think with union giving PTO to RCA that is why the pay raise is an insult. So if the union said hey you can have one which are you choosing?

Solid Pay Raise (meaning like $1 to $1.50 an hour)
1 hour of AL for every 20 hours worked

I am a regular carrier so I cannot speak even ONE word for an RCA. I will, however, remind everyone , RCA and regular alike ; PTFs too, that items are NOT any cheaper to purchase just because you are on annual leave. That gallon of milk is the same price whether you are working or on annual leave. This AL thing is LONG overdue for RCAs. I mean decades long overdue but WAY more money would be the way to go.

When I was an RCA I considered this a part time job, and that's all that I wanted from it! So based on that I would want the Higher Wage! The AL wasn't an issue because my FT position took care of paid time off!

But right now RCAs all work over 40 hrs a week and told if they don’t there will be problems. Our POOM said any RCA not working 12 hrs a day, she wants their number….
My PM said she made an agreement that we would be as close to 40 hrs a week as possible. I signed up for part time/ I had a full time job ( I don’t anymore thanks to the PO)

If that woman calls me I’ll be changing my number.
This is where the contract fails ALL relief carriers. All other non career get at least time and a half after 8 hours in a day. PSEs and CCAs get double time after 10 hours in a day. This is a crime that relief carriers are expected to be working 12 hours! And on top of that you may have to supply a vehicle in some offices. Our system is broken and this new contract tries to puts a bandaid on a gunshot wound. My heart breaks for every new RCA that walks in our door. I know the treatment they are going to receive . And 1900 PTFs for the whole country is a joke. Go to the city carrier, Mailhandlers and APWUs site and look how many non career have been made regular in the last year. With the help from their unions. We hold on to one sub per route and it is not attainable in the larger offices . My DR even told me that when I wrote the letter requesting a sub. She said you will NEVER see a sub on every route in your office. We have 17 regular routes.

Get a backbone, it's a part time job! The only obligation you have is to your primary route. For anything more than that the rural craft has a thing called a matrix for coverage purposes. Not only that but every route contractually should have an RCA assigned to it. So if Miss Poom has an agreement with someone that's her problem and to get off her azz and start hiring more RCA's! That's the agreement the NRLCA has with the USPS!

Why does the POOM want to call a carrier over a workhour conflict? She needs to instruct the postmaster and supervisors to control workhours.

Your rep (likely) doesn't know if there is a violation until they haven't first tested for faults in the order of consideration in the other office. If there's a relief day work list not being properly utilized, then someone has pockets that are due for some filling, and you should not have been sent to that office.

I don't know what the "agreement" was nor its enforceability. Perhaps ask for a copy.

I’ve called my union rep, he told me I have no grievance.
I’ve been doing this for 19 yrs…it was PT for 18 of them.
We are not a matrix office.
I am the RCA assigned as relief to the only full time route in my office. I’m being sent to 4-5 different offices weekly (who do not have RCAs)
plus Amazon Sunday.

Union said as long as I’m being told to cover full routes I can not decline/refuse to go. He said it was changed in the last rural contract
Not a matrix office? Every office has a matrix.

Your rep is referencing Article 30.2.D.5:

I guess what I'm saying is to grow a pare, call their bluff, tell them sorry I'm working my other job. Reverse the tables and give them your two week notice. I believe you will see some very quick back peddling, and if you don't its their loss. You could find another PT position that won't be abusing you!

Voglio is correct in my experience. It took me handing in resignation letter then being putting on vacation by OIC for them to realize just how much they need me. Now they work by my schedule not the other way around.

Not saying this will work for every office, but for your own well being it might be time to talk/try it yourself. In the end it is your choice and you need to weigh all the pros and cons then decide. I was more then willing to walk away from USPS no matter how much I do love the job. It was causing way to much stress at hone when I have enough to deal with without work causing more.

I applied for two jobs today
I’m giving myself some options - money is less but my sanity seems to be more important
I’m not sure I’ll even tell my supervisor I’m looking. Might just wait and see if I get the jobs and m never show up again.
There is other careers in the Postal Service you could apply for. Have you considered a PSE or mail handlers job? Your time will count for placement of seniority if you switch. I have helped a couple of young people navigate the hiring and both are happy in the mail handlers position at the plant. I warned both away from mail carrying. And all bid jobs that I have seen when you go career at the plant have 2 days off in a row.

When you get offers from both jobs choose The one that would work best for you. Then and only then notify management of your resignation could be immediately or a time frame. It might change how management treats you drastically.

I never told anyone in my office I was looking until I got the job and that’s when I talked to my management about my new availability. It didn’t change the way anything was done until I handed in resignation.

I wish you the best and hope you can find peace again Either with usps or out of it.

Congratulation's, I honestly hope that if you really like being an RCA that it doesn't come to you leaving the postal service but instead they will come to their senses and work with you to satisfy both of your needs. Resulting in treating you like human being again!

I was thinking along the same lines:
What plans do the RCAs have?...will you be a career rca?.then the contract may be fir you...will you eventually be a regular?...then NO may be the way to go

As crazy as it sounds career for me. My other job while pays more I really do not like it. Even as an RCA IMO No is the way to go. if they would have added a clear goal time wise to get career like every other union my mind might be different.
